Is it just me, or does that sound like yet another lyric from a bad eighties song? Alluding, of course, to Catherine, who cries when it rains. Why does she do that? Hmm...here are some other little tidbits to ponder:
*Describe the relationship between Lt. Henry and Miss Van Campen.
*Why is the barber hostile to Henry?
*What is Henry's reaction when he sees Catherine again?
*Describe Henry's experience when he looks at the wound. Have you had a similar experience? Why do we do this?
*What is the surgeon's advice? Why does he want a second opinion? What does this reveal about Henry?
*Why does Catherine want to know about Henry's past love? Why do you think he lies? Would Catherine think less of him if he told the truth?
*Describe Catherine's behavior toward Henry.
*Who is Fergy? Does she like Henry?
*Why is Catherine opposed to getting married right now?
*What are Catherine's and Henry's views about religion?
*Has Henry changed in any way since the beginning of the novel? Is he more or less selfish?
*How does Henry lose his convalescent leave?
*What important information does Catherine reveal to Henry?
*What else do they talk about before he leaves?
The relationship between Lt. Henry and Miss Van Campen is that they bot h equally don't like the other and you can tell that they won't be getting along with each other very much. Its quite funny that the barber was hostile towards Heney. The barber thought that Henry was an Austrain officer and was the enemy, though we all know that Henry is not an Austrian officer and is fighting with the Italians. Henry's reaction when he saw Catherine again was that he was madly in love with her. This reaction is so different than the last time he saw her and was not in love with her. The reaction that Henry has when he sees the wounds to his knees is not that pleasent. He didn't want to look at the x-rays of his knees and he descrided his knees at the hospital as not to fresh ground hamburger. The fact that Henry wanted a second doctors opinon on his knee showed that he didn't trust the opinons of the first doctor. Also Henry shows that he knows how well first captians can preform medical surgries and that a major would preform a better surgery than a first captain. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love life to make sure that she found someone that she could love and stay with. I think that Henry lied about parts of the past to let Catherine feel that she can trust him and not think poorly of him because he has said simialer things to her to girls before. Catherines attitude towards Henry is very much of a wife towards a husband. Its quite interesting to read this because they haven't known each other for very long and they are already talking like they are married to each other. Fergy is Catherines friend who also happens to be a nurse and does not like Henry very mcuh. She (Fergy) seems to have it stuck in her head that Henry is only going to cause trouble for Catherine and that they will never be married because he will go off and fight before they are married. Catherine is opposed to getting married right now because she knows that if she would get married they would send her back to Scottland and her and Henry would not be able to see each other until after the war. Also because they are married in the sense that they act like it but its not legal yet. Since the beginning of the novel you can start to tell that Henry is becoming less and less selfish. Henry his convalescent leave because he has jaundice of the eyes from drinking too much. During this part of the book Catherine reveals some jaw-dropping infomation: she's 3-months pregant. Right before he leaves, Henry and Catherine talk about where they are going to have the baby. That's a subject that is quite important to talk about because he is just leaving her pregant while he goes back to fight in the war and its a big deal.
ReplyDeleteCatherine cries when it rains because she believes it is hard on love. Lieutenant Henry and Miss Van Campen do not have a friendly relationship. They have a mutual dislike for each other because she won't let him drink without doctor's orders and he is rude to her in return. The barber is hostile to Henry because he believes Henry is with the Austrian army and is scared of him. When Henry got to see Catherine again, he got butterflies in his stomach and fell in love. The surgeon’s advice on Henry's knee is to wait three to six months for the synovial fluid to re-form, and then operate on the knee. Henry notices a stripe beside the three stars on the doctor's sleeve and realizes he is a first captain. He knows that a major would be more knowledgeable so he asks for a second opinion, showing Henry knows all the ranks and their abilities. When Catherine asks about Henry's past, I think he lies to protect her from the truth. I think Catherine knows the truth but would rather be lied to than have to accept it. Fergy is Catherine's good friend. She strongly dislikes Henry because she thinks he is just going to hurt her. Catherine doesn't want to get married now because they would not let a married woman stay in the army and they already act like a married couple. Neither Catherine nor Henry are religious people. Henry has developed into a less selfish person as the story progresses, acting more toward Catherine's desires than his own. Henry loses his convalescent leave because Miss Van Campen catches him drinking and blames his jaundice on it. Catherine tells Henry she is about three months pregnant right before he leaves. They also discuss writing letters to each other every day in English that are confusing enough that the censors can't read them, but simple enough that Catherine understands them.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Lt. Henry and Miss Van Campen is dysfunctional; he and she have personalities that battle with one another. Miss Van Campen is very strict and does not put up with Lt. Henry's joking manner. The barber is cross with Henry because he believes that Henry is an Austrian. When Henry sees Catherine again, his thoughts stated that, "When I saw her I was in love with her. Everything turned over inside of me." (Pg 91) When Henry looks at his wounds looked "of not too freshly ground hamburger steak." (Pg 95) I would have to say that humans think like that because we like to make connections with textures and feels we have seen and touched before. The surgeon's advice is to wait six months before operating to be on the safe side. Henry wants a second opinion because he thinks that that is a ridiculous amount of time; by that remark, you could tell that the Lt. was lacking in the area of patience. Catherine asks Henry about his past loves to see if she could really trust him with her heart. I think that Henry lies to satisfy Catherine and not to make her second guess her decisions; Catherine would think less of him if she knew the truth. Catherine's behavior toward Henry seems to be very clingy; she seems to have abandonment issues. "Fergy" is the nickname for Helen Ferguson, another nurse that takes a liking to Catherine. She goes to the horse races with them. Ferguson does not care for Lt. Henry because she believes that he is just out to break Catherine's heart. Catherine opposes getting married at the moment because she doesn't want to be separated from her love. She and Henry carry no religion; Catherine couldn't care less if she got pregnant out of wedlock. In that point of the novel, I do believe that Henry changed into being less selfish because he is not only thinking about his feelings, but Catherine's feelings as well. Henry loses his convalescent leave due to the fact that he has contracted jaundice with heavy drinking as the culprit. The important information that Catherine reveals to Henry is that he is going to be a father. Before Henry leaves, they also talk about the future of their relationship and the future for "young Catherine."
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Fergy and Henry started out civil earlier in the novel. She was friendly and accepting of him when he and Rinaldi visit Catherine but as we find out later on, her feelings towards him have changed. She feels his relationship or 'affair' with Catherine is "immoral". She is unhappy about the situation but she demonstrates great concern for the well-being of her friend while coming off as, in my opinion, a paranoid but also lonely, maybe almost jealous women.
DeleteHenry and Mrs. Van Campen do not like each other. The feeling is both ways, mainly because of the fact that Henry is more laid back and happy go lucky and Van Campen is strict and to the point. The barber was unfriendly with Henry because he thought Henry was an Austrian officer. When Henry sees Catherine, it is the first time he truly and completely falls in love with her. The doctor tells Henry to wait about six months for the fluid in his knee to form again, and then have surgery. Henry sees the decorations on the doctor's shirt and sees he is a first captain. He knows that a major would know more about the situation so he asks for a second opinion, which shows Henry is observant and smart. Henry lied to Catherine about past loves because he didn't want to come off as a player or someone who would leave her for another woman. She would have thought less of him if he had told the truth. Catherine acts very attached to Henry and always seems to be looking for assurance from him by asking a lot of "don't I" questions. Fergy is another nurse in the hospital and doesn't really like Henry. Catherine is opposed to getting married because if they do, she will be forced to leave Italy and there would be no chance of seeing him until after the war. Neither one of them are religious. It is clear that Henry has become less selfish since the beginning of the novel by listening to Catherine's thoughts before telling her his own. Henry loses his leave because he gets jaundice from drinking. Before he leaves, Catherine tells him she is pregnant. They also talk about the future of themselves and the baby.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Mrs. Van Campen mutually dislike each other. The barber disliked Henry because he thought he was an Austrian. When Henry saw Catherine again, he realized he was in love with her. When he saw his wound, he described it as "fresh ground hamburger". The surgeon says it will take him 6 months to recuperate, but he wants the opinion of a higher ranking surgeon. Catherine is in love with Henry and wants to please him. She wants to be with him all the time. Fergy does not like Henry. Catherine doesn't want to get married yet because she is afraid they will be separated. Henry gets jaundice from drinking and loses his leave, but before he goes back to the war, Catherine tells him she is pregnant.
ReplyDeleteCatherine is always crying when it rains and complains until Henry comforts her. Henry makes her feel safe and in love. Ms Van Campen and Henry loathe one another. They have opposite personalities that do not really get along. When Henry has a barber come to give him a haircut the barber is antagonistic towards him. We later found out it’s because he wronged him for someone else who tried to harm him before. When Henry spots Catherine for the first time again he finally feels in love with her. A surgeon later tells him he has to wait six months before having his operation to heal his leg. He calls for another opinion from someone who is higher ranked or simply better. When Catherine asks Henry about his past loves he lies to come off as a good guy and not someone who just gets around. I believe if he would of spoke the truth she would have thought less of Henry. Catherine always likes to be reassured of Henry’s love for her. She frequently questions him about things to make her feel good inside. Catherine believes her and Henry will be estranged in the near future causing her to not want a devoted marriage. The couple never expresses any sort of religion or beliefs of right or wrong. I think Henry has changed because he thinks more of others and is less conceded or focused on himself. Henry loses his leave due to him contracting jaundice from drinking alcohol. Before Henry has to leave Catherine reveals she is three months along a pregnancy. The two also talk about the future and the upcoming life of the child.
ReplyDeleteCatherine only cries when it rains, because Henry is there to comfort her and make her feel loved. Miss. Van Campen is the head of the nurses at the hospital where Henry and Catherine meet. Lt. Henry and Miss. Van Campen give each other the cold shoulder during the duration of Henry's stay because, they don't like each other. The reason that the barber shows hostility to Henry is because the barber mistakes him as being an Austrian soldier. When Henry sees Catherine again,he is in love with her. Henry didn't want to look at his wound because, he said it looked like raw meat. When Henry realizes that his doctor is only a first captain and not a major, he wants a second opinion from a more knowledgeable ranking. The human brain doesn't want to see harm to one's own body, so most people don't like seeing their own wounds. The second opinion is from a major because, Henry didn't want to wait six months if it truly wasn't necessary.Catherine is curious about Henry's past loves to see if he can be trusted. Henry lies to Catherine because, he wants to make sure Catherine doesn't see his past as harming their future together.Catherine would think less of him if he decided to tell her the truth.Catherine's behavior seems to be too careful, and worried due to a past relationship to make sure he stays. Fergy is the name given to Helen Ferguson; a good friend to Catherine. Fergy does not approve of Henry because, she doesn't think he's there for the right reasons.Marriage isn't in Catherine's options right now because, she would have to leave Italy and leave Henry behind. Catherine Nor Henry have any religious preferences.I see Henry as less selfish is this point of the novel because, he has Catherine too look after now and not just himself.Heavy drinking is the cause for Henry losing his leave, giving him jaundice.Catherine revealed that she's pregnant. This information makes it necessary now for Henry and Catherine to discuss their future before Henry leaves.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen from the start don't like each other. The barber is hostile to Henry because he thinks he's with the enemies. When Henry sees Catherine again he knows he's truly in love with her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Henry describes his wound as "freshly ground hamburger steak". I have not had a similar experience. I think we do this because we like to relate things as a way to describe something. The surgeon's advice is to stay of his knee for 6 months and then have surgery. Henry wants a second opinion first, because he can't stay in bed and do nothing for that long. Secondly, because the surgeon was only a first captain and we wanted a majors opinion. This reveals that Henry trusts and prefers higher up opinions, like a major, rather than a lower persons opinion, like a first doctor. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love life to see if there's a possibility that he could love someone other than her. I think Henry lied so that she didn't have to worry about Henry loving some one other then her. I think Catherine would've thought a little less of him and would've been concerned about if they truly would stay together. Catherine's behavior towards Henry is very loving and kind. She's willing to do anything for him to make him happy. Fergy is Catherine's friend who is a nurse as well. Helen Ferguson (Fergy) doesn't like Henry that much, but is willing to help him pass notes to Catherine. Catherine is opposed to getting married right now because she is scared she will get separated from Henry until the war ends. Also, Catherine says they are married, even though it isn't legal and likes the way it is. Catherine and Henry both don't have a religion that they believe in. Henry has changed since the beginning of the novel. Henry is beginning to care more about Catherine and less about himself, making him less selfish. Henry loses his convalescent leave because he gave himself jaundice by drinking to much. Catherine's important information is that she is three months pregnant. Before he leaves they talk about writing to one another, the baby, and the future of their relationship.
ReplyDeleteIn book two of A Farewell to Arms, the section where Catherine Barkley cries to Henry, has a deeper meaning I believe. Miss. Barkley describes at the end of chapter nineteen that she sees dead in the rain. I had an idea that possibly her ex-fiancĂ© died during a battle in the rain, or rain could foreshadow Catherine Barkley’s death. Meanwhile, Henry is still in the hospital and he acquires some interesting relationships with people. He and Miss. Van Campen do not get along whatsoever. All Henry wants is wine but Miss. Van Campen doesn’t think he should have some. Henry insists on getting a haircut, so he sends the porter to find a barber. The barber misunderstands the porter and thinks that Henry is an Austrian- the enemy. Finally, as soon as Catherine Barkley walked in to see Henry he instantly fell in love with her. Next, when Henry first saw his wound on his leg he compared it to hamburger meat. He could have done this to make him feel better about his situation. I have never had to deal with a big injury/surgery. A surgeon came in to see Henry’s wound and came to the conclusion that they would have to wait six months for the synovial fluid to come back. Henry does not like this idea and calls in a second surgeon to see what his opinion would be. Henry wants the surgery done now and over with, he is not patient. Later Miss. Barkley asks Henry about his previous relationships to make sure he doesn’t go from girl to girl and she isn’t just one of them. He lies to her about the matter to keep her happy, if he told the truth she would be pretty upset. Miss. Barkley is incredibly clingy towards Henry. She wants him just to love her all day, every day, and forever. I think Helen Ferguson likes Henry since she passes notes between Henry and Barkley while he is in the hospital. She also happens to be Catherine Barkley’s best friend. Miss. Barkley and Henry pretty much act like they’re married, but she does not want to be legally married because she fears they would send her home and back to Scotland. Also, the two lovebirds are not religious one bit. Looking back at the beginning of the book, Henry has changed for the better. He cares less about himself and more for his loved one. Henry then loses his convalescent leave because Miss. Van Campen discovered all the empty alcohol bottles. She thinks that his alcoholism caused his sickness. Towards the end of book two, Catherine Barkley announces she’s pregnant. Before Henry leaves to go back to the front the couple discuss where the baby will be born and the letters they will write to each other.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen have a bad relationship. The barber is hostile to Henry because he thinks that Henry is Austrian. When sees Catherine again he feels like he is in love, and he is really happy to see her again. When Henry looked at his leg he described it as looking like hamburger meat. I haven't had any huge injuries, but when I was in 5th grade I did cut my knee open so bad I needed five stitches, and when I first saw the wound I felt sick. The surgeon's advice to Henry was to wait about 6 weeks before having surgery. Henry didn't like the idea so he wanted a second surgeons opinion. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves so she knows if she can trust him. He lies so she believes she can trust him. I think that if Henry would of told Catherine the truth then she would think badly of him. Fergy is a nurse at the hospital that is friends with Henry and Catherine. Catherine doesn't want to get married because she is afraid she would get kicked out. Henry and Catherine are not religious, but I'm sure they believe in God. I believe that Henry is less selfish, he is usually thinking about Catherine most of the time. Henry loses his leave after he get jaundice from drinking too much. Catherine reveals some very important information that she is three months pregnant. Then they talk about the future and their "Little Catherine".
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Ms. Van Campen is a strained one. They don't see eye-to-eye on anything, which is a source of contention between the two. The barber is hostile to Henry because the Porter accidentally led him to believe that he was an Austrian officer. Henry is estatic when he sees Catherine again, because after such a traumatic experience, he suddenly falls in love with her. Henry has an adverse reaction to the wound, immediately looking away and simply describing it as raw meat. I have had a similar experience when I got a cut to the bone on my leg, which I acted the same way. Humans by nature tend to not want to look at wounds because they always look far worse than they are. This can help us focus on the task of getting it fixed rather than overreacting. The surgeon tells Henry to stay off the leg for six months then get surgery, to which Henry asks for a second opinion because he does not want to be bedridden for six months. This reveals Henry is inquisitive, and does not take everything at face value. Catherine asks about Henry's past love because she wants to know if he is trying to replace someone else with her or if the feelings he has are true. He lies because he feels like Catherine would not respect him or leave him if he told the truth. She would not have thought any less of him, as she is very forgiving and open throughout the novel. Catherine is very loving and nurturing toward the injured Henry partly because of how he feels but moreso that she has fallen madly in love with Henry. Fergy is a fellow nurse to Catherine, who likes Henry and is happy with Catherine's decision with him. Catherine does not want to be married because she did not want to be told to leave the hospital and go home. Neither of the two are religious, but they do not scoff it either, because they know that it helps get many people through their days. Henry has become less selfish since the start, mostly toward Catherine. Henry loses his leave when Ms. Van Campen finds the alcohol bottles in his cabinet, and thinks that he tried to inflict jaundice on himself. Catherine reveals that she is pregnant with Henry's child. They talk about leaving the country and a future as a family before Henry leaves. Henry promises to find her and return to her when the war is over.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not get along very well but later on they do get a bit nicer towards each other. The barber doesn't like Henry because he believes that he is Austrian-the enemy. When Henry sees Catherine again, he is truly happy to see her and feels less lonely. Henry looks at his leg and describes it looking like hamburger meat. The only serious injury I have had was when I got hit in my eye and my mom describe it to look like vegetable oil coming out of my eye and had to get 3(?) stitches. A surgeon told Henry that he should wait 6 weeks to have surgery. Henry did not like the idea of staying in a bed for 6 weeks so he asked for another opinion and the second doctor said he could do it the following morning. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves so she knows if she can trust him and he lies. She senses that he is lying but is still satisfied with his answer. If Henry would of told Catherine the truth, she might go ballistic and end the relationship. Fergy is a nurse who gets along with both Henry and Catherine. Catherine doesn't want to get married because she is afraid she would get kicked out of the country and back to Scotland. Henry and Catherine believe that there is a God but they are not religious. Henry has grown up a bit. He seems less selfish and seems to actually care about Catherine. Henry gets diagnosed with jaundice and Miss Van Campen finds alcohol under Henry's bed. She accuses him off getting jaundice on purpose so he wouldn't go back to the war. She declines him leave. Catherine announces her pregnancy to Henry. They talk about leaving the country so the both of them could have a future together as a family. Henry makes a promise to Catherine that he will find her when the war is over.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen have contrasting personalities. Lt. Henry is easy-going and relaxed, while Miss Van Campen is very strict and serious. Lt. Henry wants her to get him some alcohol, and she refuses. Therefore; Henry is disrespectful to her in return. When Henry wants a haircut, he sends the porter to find a barber. The barber is very hostile towards Henry because he thinks that he is in the Austrian army. When Catherine walks into the room, Henry realizes that he is truly in love with her. When Lt. Henry looks at his wound he says “…they had the look of not too freshly ground hamburger steak. Now they were crusted and the knee was swollen and discolored and the calf sunken but there was no pus.” (Pg 95-96) I believe that humans compare wounds to other unsightly things so that they can paint the image into other people’s minds that were not there to see it personally. The first surgeon’s advice was to wait six months before operating on his knee. He doesn’t like the idea of sitting in a bed for six months, so he gets another doctor’s opinion. This doctor said that he would like to begin operating the next morning. This shows that Henry has no patience and likes to be up and moving, not lying around doing nothing. Catherine wants to know about Henry’s past loves to make sure that she can fully trust him and make sure that she won’t get hurt in the long run. I think that Henry lies about certain parts of his past so that he doesn’t hurt Catherine and to make sure that they have a strong trust in each other. Catherine would probably think less of him if he told her the whole truth, but she would probably also respect him for telling her the truth. Catherine’s behavior is commonly described as being a “good girl”. She is very loving and devoted to him. Fergy is Catherine’s close friend. She doesn’t like Henry because she doesn’t trust him and she thinks he is going to hurt Catherine. Catherine is opposed to getting married because she is afraid of being separated from Henry during the war. Catherine and Henry don’t really believe in any certain religion. Henry has changed since the beginning of the novel and has become less selfish. He is starting to put Catherine’s wishes before his own. Henry loses his convalescent leave because he had self-imposed jaundice due to drinking too much alcohol. Catherine reveals to Henry that she is three months pregnant. They talk about the letters they will write to each other and their future together and the future of their upcoming child.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen seriously despise each other. The dislike is mutual between them. Henry asks her to give him some alcohol but Miss Van Campen refuses because the doctor didn't order to give him any. After Henry sends out someone to retrieve booze; Miss Van Campen sends him some spiked eggnog. The barber incident I found to be quite humorous when he kept talking about slitting his throat. The barber thought Henry was an Austrian officer; which in the enemy. When Henry sees Catherine again he realizes that he loves her. Contrasting to earlier when he was playing a simple love game and lying about his feelings towards her; Henry loves her for real this time. When Henry sees his wound for the first time after being wrapped up for some time he compares it to ground up meat. I think people compare wounds to sick looking things to exaggerate a bit... sometimes without even knowing they do. I can honestly say I have never had an experience like that (Thank Goodness) and that the only horrible injuries I've ever had were internal so I really couldn't see them. The surgeon's advice was to wait six months before operating on the wound just to be safe. Henry wishes for a second opinion because waiting in bed for six months seemed too long for him. This shows that Henry doesn't have a lot of patience and likes to get things done and over with so that he can go back to being mobile again. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love as a test to see if she can trust him. Henry failed that one, big time and lies to her. I think he lied because who would want to be with or would want to be known as the man who has been around the block multiple times? I don't think Catherine would have thought less of Henry if he told her the truth because she seems to see right through all of his imperfections. Catherine's behavior towards Henry is caring, forgiving, and somewhat suspicious of his past relationships. Fergy is a fellow nurse of Catherine who works at the same hospital Henry is staying in. She is also a friend of Catherine's as well. She doesn't really like Henry all that much because she thinks he will hurt her and is worried for Catherine's health when she visits him after all her work every day. Fergy also declines an open invite to their wedding when Henry asks about it saying that she doubts they'll even marry in the first place. Catherine is opposed to getting hitched right now because she’s worried about losing him when Henry goes back to fighting in the war. Catherine and Henry don't have a religion or practice anything very religious as well. Henry has learned to put others before himself and is becoming less selfish. Henry loses his convalescent leave when one of the nurses find out he has jaundice from excessive drinking and reports him. Catherine tells Henry that she is three months pregnant and Henry promises that he will find Catherine again when the war is over so that they can start a life together.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen don't get along since their personalities are very different. Henry is more laid back while Miss Van Campen is strict and likes order. The barber was hostile to Henry since he thought he was an Austrian officer and didn't want to share news with the enemy. When Henry saw Catherine, he was in love with her. When Henry looks at his wound, he describes it not in a very appealing way. I haven't had an experience like this. People do this because we want to describe what this felt like and others can understand the experience for what it was like. The doctor advises to wait six months so the knee can open properly. He wants another doctor to see to his knee because he doesn't want to stay in bed for six months. This shows that Henry is impatient. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves because she wants to trust him, and make sure he doesn't leave her. Henry lies so that Catherine won't get jealous of anyone he might have loved before her. I wouldn't think Catherine would think less of him for telling the truth since she had a relationship where she loved someone before Henry. Catherine's behavior toward Henry is complete love and kindness to him. She cares deeply and will do anything for him. Fergy is Catherine's friend and she doesn't really like Henry that much. Fergy is concerned that he will hurt Catherine and that he won't treat her well. Catherine is opposed to marriage right now because she would get sent away and they wouldn't be able to be together until after the war. Catherin and Henry don't have a distinct religion. Catherine said that Henry is her religion. Henry has changed since the beginning of the novel by becoming a little less selfish. Miss Van Campen causes Henry to lose his leave because she found empty bottles of jaundice under his bed. Catherine reveals to Henry that she is three months pregnant. Before Henry leaves, they talk about some places they can visit after the war, as well as their future child.

ReplyDeleteHenry and Mrs. Van Campen didn’t like each other from the very beginning. The conflict started when their personalities clashed; Henry is a more laid back, go with the flow kind of guy. Mrs. Van Campen has a strict, let’s get stuff done attitude. The barber is aggressive toward Henry when they meet because the barber thinks that Henry is an Austrian officer. The barber felt strong enough toward Henry that he refused the payment for the shaving. When Henry notices Catherine for the first time after he returns, I think he was surprised that he is truly in love with her. When he saw his wound for the first time, he described it as "fresh ground hamburger". The surgeon advised Henry to wait 6 months before removing the fragments from his leg. Henry is not thrilled to be told he had to wait that long so he asked for another opinion from a higher ranking surgeon. Through his friendship with Rinaldi he knew the rank of the surgeons and who would be most qualified for a second opinion. Henry lied to Catherine about past loves because he didn't want to appear as someone who would leave her for another woman and never look back. I don’t think he needed to lie to her because Catherine was already crazy for him. Catherine is loving and kind toward Henry and she would do anything to please him. Fergy, Catherine’s best friend, hates that Henry is interfering with her friendship with Catherine. She also fells that Henry and Catherine’s relationship is inappropriate and he is getting Catherine in too much trouble. Catherine is opposed to getting married right now because she is scared she will get separated from Henry while the war continues and that he will be killed and never return. Also, Catherine says they are married, even if it’s not legally married she likes it the way it is. Neither Catherine nor Henry has a religion but they both believe there is a greater purpose to life. I think Henry has changed because he thinks more of others and is less focused on himself and more on Catherine. Henry loses his convalescent leave due to him contracting jaundice from drinking alcohol. Before Henry leaves Catherine reveals that she is pregnant and about three months along. The two talk about the future; they dream about where they are going to live, their child, and the life they will live together.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not get along well. They have different personalities because Hnery is a soldier who is relaxed and laid back, while Miss Van Campen is strict and uptight about her new hospital. The barber is hostile towards Henry because the porter accidentally leads the barber to believe that Henry is an Austrian officer. Hnery is excited to see Catherine again because after such a gruesome experience he suddenly falls in love with her. Henry describes his as now crusted and swollen as apposed to looking like fresh hamburger meat(which is what they looked like at the field hospital). The surgeon advises Henry to wait 6 months before being operated on but Henry asks for a second opinion. He does not want to be bedridden for six months. It reveals Henry is young and adventurous and he will not be held back by an injury. Catherine asks about Henry's past loves because she is trying to figure out whether his feelings for her are true, or if she is just filling the hole of one of his past lovers. He lies to her because he feels she will not want him as much if she feels like he will leave for another woman. Catherine is very truthful and forgiving throughout the novel. I do not believe she would have thought less of Henry because she is too attached to him. Catherine is loving and nurturing towards Henry and would do anything for him. Fergy is a nurse, who is a good friend to Catherine, and also she approves of Henry. Catherine is opposed to getting married because Henry will be gone at war and she does not want to be alone while he is gone. Neither Catherine nor Henry have a religion. Henry has changed since the beginning of the novel and I now believe that he is less selfish now that he has someone in his life that he really loves and cares for. Henry loses his convalescent leave because Ms. Van Campen finds all the alcohol he has been storing and she believes he has tried to force jaundice upon himself. Catherine drops the news that she is three months pregnant with Henry's child. They talk about the future-moving away and starting a family together. Henry promises he will find her when the war is done. Catherine only cries when it rains because she feels alone and dead when it rains.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen are not pleasant towards each other. He likes to have a good time and is relaxed, while Miss Van Campen is more uptight and strict because she is running the new hospital. The barber is hostile towards Henry because he thinks Henry is an Austrian in which he isn't. The barber was misinformed by the porter who sent for him. When Henry see's Catherine again he is elated, in love, and relieved that she is there to take care of him. The first time Henry see's his wound he is disgusted by it and said it reminded him of ground up meat. I have not had a similar experience to this because I've never really severely injured myself like Henry had. I think we do things like that to try to make it look worse than it is so we don't feel as bad about it. The surgeon advises Henry to not do anything for six months until they can operate on it. Henry wants a second opinion because he doesn't want to be sitting around for six months doing nothing. This shows that Henry doesn't like to be lazy and sit around he likes to be able to be mobile and do things. Catherine asks about Henry's past lovers because she wants to make sure he won't do what he did to them to her, she wants to be able to make sure he loves her. Henry lies to her because he doesn't want her to think he will leave her like he did to the rest of his women. I don't think Catherine would have thought less of him because she was too in love with him to really care. Catherine's behavior towards Henry is very loving and nurturing in which she would do anything to please him. Fergy is one of Catherine's fellow nurses and friend. Fergy doesn't like Henry because she feels he isn't good enough for Catherine and that he will just end up hurting her. Catherine chooses not to get married because she fears of getting kicked out of the hospital and never being able to see Henry. Catherine and Henry both don't have a religion and feel like they don't need one either. Henry changed since the beginning by becoming less selfish and thinking more about the person he loves and how she feels. Henry loses his leave because he ends up getting jaundice from drinking too much alcohol when he shouldn't have been drinking any. Henry also finds out from Catherine that she is pregnant with his child. Before Henry leaves they talk about moving away and getting away from the war to start their family together.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen don't like each other too much. The Barber was hostile because he thought Henry was an Austrian. Henry is delighted to see Catherine again. after being away from her, i think he has developed some more feelings for her. He described his wound as ground hamburger steak; I've never had a similar experience. The surgeon wants Henry to wait 6 months before operating to remove the fragments, but he doesn't like that and asks for on opinion from a higher ranked doctor. I think this shows that he is either impatient or just an active person who doesn't want to be bedridden for 6 months. I think Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves to see if he has ever felt this way before about someone else. If he hasn't then maybe they're going to last, but i think he lies to please and protect her. Catherine's love for him wouldn't be changed by that though. Fergy is Catherine's old friends. She doesn't like Henry because she is paranoid of what will happen to Catherine with him. Catherine is against getting married because she feels that she will lose Henry in the war and she will be all alone. Neither of them have a religion. Henry has become less selfish since the start of the novel. Henry lose his convalescent leave because Ms. Van Campen thinks Henry is trying to give himself Jaundice by drinking excessive alcohol. Catherine reveals she is pregnant, and they talk about their future together with their child.
ReplyDeleteAt this time Catherine is very opposed to getting married due to Henry’s involvement in the war. Also, she is wary of marriage due to her prior engagement that was nullified by her former fiancĂ©’s death in war.
ReplyDeleteWhen Henry gets hurt he is given a surgeon’s advice is to wait six months before the operation so the shrapnel in his legs can fully cyst over. He wants a second opinion because, one, he doesn’t want to wait six months and two, the surgeons were captains and he wanted a doctor with the rank of Major to look him over and give an opinion. This shows that Henry has a knowledge of army rank when it coincides with experience and expertise. This also shows Henry’s lack of trust in average people, and need for control over his situation, even if the surgeons knew what they were talking about.
Lt. Henry and Miss Van Campen have a paranoyed relationship. Ithink that she does'nt have personal problem with necessarily Henry, its just the kind of person he is that she does'nt like. The barber is hostile towards Henry because the barber thinks he is an Austrian. I don't know if anyone else thought of this but the whole seen reminded me of Sweeny Todd. I don't think Henry is an impationant person when he is told that the surgery would have to wait six months, and sought for a second opinon. I would have done the same, waiting six months for surgey is ridiculous. Catherine does not want to marry Henery right then because we he goes back to the front the seperation between then would be worse. The both of them have are nonreligous. Henry also finds out that Catherine is pregant.
ReplyDeleteLieutenant Henry and Miss Van Campen have very different personalities, so as soon as they met they were not very fond of each other. Miss Van Campen is strict and uptight, while Henry is easy-going and laid back. The barber is hostile towards Henry because he thought he was an Austrian. When Henry saw Catherine again he said, "When I saw her I was in love with her. Everything turned over inside of me." (Pg 91) The first time Henry sees his wound, he compares it to "freshly ground hamburger steak". Although I have not had a similar experience, I think we do this because we like to relate things to something we already know. The surgeon's advice is to stay off his knee for 6 months and then they would undergo the surgery. After Henry sees the decorations on the doctor's shirt, he realizes that the doctor is only a first captain. Since he knew a major would know more about the situation he was in, he asked for a second opinion. This shows that Henry is very intelligent and observant. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love life to see if she can trust him. I believe Henry lied so that she wouldn't think that he was playing her or would only be with her for a while until he found another woman. I think Catherine would be hurt if he told her the truth, but also be glad that he was able to tell her what he felt. Helen Ferguson, or Fergy, is Catherine's friend who is also a nurse. Fergy doesn't really like Henry because she feels that their relationship is inappropriate and is afraid that Henry will hurt Catherine. Catherine does not want to get married because married women are not allowed to stay in the army. Neither Catherine nor Henry are religious. Lt. Henry changed since the beginning of the novel by becoming less selfish. Henry loses his leave after one of the nurses finds out he has jaundice from drinking to much. Henry also finds out that he will be having a child with Catherine. Before Henry leaves, him and Catherine talk about moving away to start their family together.
ReplyDeleteHenry has greatly changed by the time he arrives in Milan. His attitude towards Catherine and the war has completely changed. He now realizes how much he loves Catherine, and wants to spend more time with her. He takes their relationship much more seriously and proposes marriage. His detached and distant personality changes after his injury. He quickly becomes one of those people that will do anything to keep him off the front; the same kind of person as the man Henry advised to injure his head.
ReplyDeleteHenry has also become more selfish. In Book 1 Henry displayed many selfless acts of loyalty or friendship. Now he asks a lot of other people. He wants to spend as much time with Catherine as possible, but this is not as much for their relationship as it is for himself. Although they do truly love each other, he asks her to do a lot for him. Another example is when Henry and Catherine planned to take a vacation together during his convalescent leave, Henry only thought of himself. He let his fear of returning to the front take over and foolishly tried to delay his return. Henry tried everything to stay, even if this meant sacrificing his trip with Catherine and disappointing her.
I feel that Henry and Miss Van Campen share a detached form of amity. She appears to dislike his presence in the hospital and feels that he possesses an uncouth attitude toward her on their first meeting. Yet, she sends him eggnog that contains sherry despite the fact that patients are not permitted to have alcohol. A sign of deference perhaps? The next morning a barber comes to give Henry a shave; as they talk, Henry can’t help but notice that the barber remains solemn and nastily makes short remarks of allegiance. Later, Henry finds that the barber mistook him for an Austrian soldier. The surgeon recommends that Henry wait until fluid redevelops in his knee again. Henry notices that the doctor is of a lower rank and requests for a second opinion, this proves that Henry is very cautious of his well-being.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is strange. The two do not get along, nor do they like eachother, but it is some what of a mutual respect when Miss Van Campen sends Henry the eggnog spiked with sherry. The barber is hostile to Henry because he thought he was an Austrian soldier. When Henry see's Catherine again, he is deeply in love with her. The surgeons advice is to wait 3-6 months to wait for the fluid in his knee to reform, but Henry noticed that the man was a first captain, and he wants a second opinion from someone more knowledgeable. It reveals that Henry knows about the ranks in war. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love life because she wants to know if she can trust him. Henry lies when she asks because he does not want to come off as a person that would leave her. I believe Catherine would think less of him if he told her the truth. Catherine is clingy towards Henry, wanting him to love her all day, everyday. Fergy is Catherine's best friend, and she doesn't like Henry because she thinks that he will just end up hurting her. Catherine doesn't believe in getting married yet because they are already like a married couple, and she fears if shes married, she wont be able to see Henry when he's in the war. Neither Henry nor Catherine have a religious view. Henry has become less selfish since the beginning of the novel, because now he is actually listening to peoples thoughts, like Catherine's. Henry's drinking gives him jaundice, and it revokes his leave. Catherine tells Henry that she is pregnant, and they talk about how their future will be.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not like eachother. They do not get along very well, nor do they agree on much. The barber is hostile to Henry because he is led to believe that Henry is an Austrian. When seeing Catherine again, he is still in love with her. The advice given to Henry by the surgeon was he was going to have to wait about 6 months but he noticed the first captain, and asked for his opinion on the manner. It shows that Henry is bright. Catherine is curious about Henry's past love life because she wants to know what kind of person he is. Henry lies because he does not want to seem as someone that would hurt her. I think Catherine would think less of him if he told the truth rather than lie. Catherine is deeply in love with Henry and always wants to know how much he loves her. Fergy is a friend of Catherine's, but she doesn't really like Henry thinking he will hurt her. Catherine repeatedly states that they are already married but doesn't want to make it official because then she wouldn't get to see him during the war. Neither of them have views on religion. Henry grew to be less selfish as the novel progressed. He started listening to other people and their opinions instead of just his own. Henry loses his convalescent leave from drinking giving him jaundice. Catherine reveals she is pregnant and they go on to talk about their future.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen have a mutual disliking for each other. The have consistent disagreements and do think the same on most anything. The barber is rude and hostile towards Henry. The barber thought that Henry was the enemy, Austrain officer, though we all know that Henry is not an Austrian and is with the Italians. Henry's reaction to seeing Catherine again is basically love at first sight. His thoughts stated that, "When I saw her I was in love with her. Everything turned over inside of me." (Pg 91) The surgeon's advice is to wait six months before operating to be on the safe side. Henry wants a second opinion because he thinks that that is a absurd amount of time; by that remark, you could tell that the Lt. was not patient. Fergy is a acquaintance of Catherine's and a nurse at the hospital. Fergy does not care much for Henry. She thinks that Henry is just looking to break Catherine's heart. Catherine is opposed to getting married because she doesn't to have to part with him during the war and neither of them have religious views. Henry has become substantially less selfish since the beginning of the novel. Henry gets jaundice from drinking and loses his leave, but before he returns to the war, Catherine drops the news that she is pregnant.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is mutual dislike, they simply don’t see eye to eye. When the barber comes to give Henry a shave he is hostile because he heard that Henry was an Austrian solider. Henry’s reaction to seeing Catherine is delightful, he is very happy to see her. They are both taking this relationship to a whole new level. In fact while Henry is staying at the hospital he asks Catherine to take night shift that way they can spend time together. When Henry looks at his wound he is disgusted and compares it to ground up meat. I have never injured myself that bad to know what he feels like. The Surgeons advice for Henry is that he should wait six months before operating. Henry doesn’t want to wait that long so he gets a second opinion. The second opinion said to operate right away. This says that Henry is impatient and wants to have more than one option. He also can’t stand the fact of sitting around for another six months doing nothing. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love to make sure he didn’t leave a bunch of girls heartbroken, if that was the case there is a chance he would do that to Catherine. I think Henry lies to make her feel safe and special like she is his one and only love. If Henry told her the truth I think she would still love him, she would just be cautious. Fergy is a nurse along with Catherine. The way Fergy acted towards Henry gave me the impression that she did not like him. Catherine doesn’t want to marry Henry before he goes back to war because she is afraid they could get separated or he might die. Neither of the two believes in religion. Catherine tells Henry that they are married, just not legally. Henry has changed for the better, he is less selfish and thinks more of others especially Catherine. Before Henry leaves Catherine tells Henry that she is three months pregnant, and so before he leaves they talk about their unborn child and the future they will have together.
ReplyDeleteThe barber is hostile to Henry because he thinks he is an Austrian soldier. Henry's reaction when he saw Catherine at the hospital he was transferred to I think was him realizing that he actually has true feelings for her. I think Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love because she is starting to develop real feelings for him too, but she asks him to lie because I don't think she wants him to know, and she wants to keep up the little game they are playing. Fergy is Catherine's good friend, and she helps Catherine and Henry send notes and keep their relationship a secret. Catherine's opposed to getting married because she thinks they will send her away.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Ms.Van Campen's relationship is a very unfriendly one. Their personalities are complete opposites and they do not get along at all. The barber was hostile to Henry because he thought he was Austrian and he did not want to give information to the enemy. When Henry sees Catherine again he is overjoyed to have her there taking care of him. When Henry looks at the wound he is disgusted but relatively calm about it. Ive never hurt myself to this extent so I do not know what that must have felt like. People do this so they can explain to other what it is like to feel this kind of pain because most people have not experianced it. The surgeons advice is to wait about six months to operate on his knee. Henry wants a second opinion because he does not think he should wait six months. This shows that Henry is not very patient and does not trust people. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love so she can begin to trust him and not be so paranoid that he will end up leaving her. I think Henry lies to her so she will calm down and he does not want her to know he has loved before her. Catherine would deffinately be more paranoid about him leaving her but I do not think she would think less of him considering she has loved before too. Catherine's acts like she is already marride to Henry. She loves him, is very comforting to him, and takes care of him daily. Fergy is a friend of Catherine and she does not care for Henry at all. Fergy thinks Henry will just use her and leave. Catherine is opposed to getting married because she knows that the doctors and nurses at the hospital will send her back to the other hospital. Catherine and Henry do not seem to have a set religon. Henry has changed a little since the beggining of the novel, he is a little more selfish but not much. He loves Catherine very much and wishes to spend as much time as possible with her. Henry loses his leave because the nurses discover he was been drinking the whole time and not working on recovering from his wound. Catherine reveals to Henry that she is three months pregnant but she tells him over and over not to worry. Before they leave they talk about their future with their child and where to meet when they get back to the war.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is not very good. Neither one of them like each other and are always disagreeing. The barber is hostile towards Henry because he misunderstood and thought that Henry was an Austrian soldier, the enemy. When Henry sees Catherine again he is filled with so much joy and happiness! He loved having her with him. When Henry sees his wound he is very disgusted by it. I have never had an experience that would compare to this. The surgeon's advice is to wait six months to have surgery. Henry wants a second opinion because he does not agree with the surgeon. Henry is a very impatient person and does not like to just sit around and do nothing. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love because she wants to be able to trust him. She does not want to wake up one day and he left her. She does not want to be played. I think Henry lies to her because he wants her to feel special and not be scared and run away. I do not think Catherine would think less of him, I just think she would be more doubtful of their relationship and always questioning him. Catherine's behavior towards Henry is very sweet and committed. Fergy is a nurse and a friend of Catherine. She does not like Henry very much because she believe he will break Catherine's heart. If he does anything to hurt her you know he better be running because Fergy will be after him. Catherine is opposed to getting married because she will be sent away from Henry. So they both say they are married, but not legally. Catherine and Henry do not really have a religion, but Catherine does say that they are each other's religion. I think Henry is less selfish because he thinking about himself and also more for Catherine now. Henry loses his convalescent leave because he has jaundice from his heavy drinking. Catherine reveals to Henry that she is going to have a baby and that he will be a father. They talk about their future together for after the war.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not have a very good relationship being that both of them dislike the other a great deal.
ReplyDeleteThe barber is hostile to Henry because he thinks that Henry is an Austrian soldier, the enemy at this time, due to a miscommunication.
When Henry sees Catherine again he is elated. He doesn't quite realize how much he actually loves and misses her until this point.
When Henry sees his wound he is disgusted yet remains calm. I've never had any major injuries and am unable to relate to this part of the novel.
The surgeon tells Lt. Henry that he will have to wait six months before his knee an be operated on. Henry demands a second opinion as his doesn't trust such a low ranking surgeon to give him advice. It reveals that Henry is a man that is determined, impatient, and not trusting but also feels the need to speak with someone that has more experience to make sure he's doing what's best for himself.
Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves so she can make herself feel better about being able to trust Henry. She asks him in order to soothe her paranoia and fear. Henry lies to make her feel better and to avoid a conflict with Catherine. Catherine may be scared of Henry leaving her if she had been told the truth but she would not think any less of him because of it.
Catherine is very loving and caring towards Henry. She is there to be with him and do whatever he wants her to. She has described herself on multiple occasions as not being herself but being him.
Fergy is a close friend of Catherine's and is very protective over her. She does not trust Henry very much nor does she like him very much.
Catherine does not want to get married right now because she is afraid that someone will send her away or split them up if they knew. They decide to say they are married even though legally they are not.
Neither Catherine nor Henry have a strict religion but Catherine has stated that they are each others religion.
Henry has become a little less selfish and has grown to care more and more for Catherine. He has started to show signs of caring and becoming less cold and indifferent.
Henry had come down with jaundice but it is later revealed that it was self inflicted because he has become an alcoholic. When Miss Van Campen discovers the sea of empty brandy bottles she adds it to her medical report and Henry is taken off leave.
Catherine reveals that she is with child and that Henry is going to be a father. She reassures him repeatedly not to be worried.
Before Henry leaves they speak of their future. Henry asks where she will have the baby. Catherine is sure they will have more children before the war is out.
Lieutenant Henry and Miss Van Campen do not like each other very much. There personalities kind of clash. The barber is hostile towards Henry because he believes Henry is and Austrian officer. When Henry got to see Catherine he realizes that he is completely in love with her. When Henry looks at his wounded knee he says it looked "of not too freshly ground hamburger steak."(Pg 95) The doctor tells Henry that he will have to wait six months in order to have surgery. Henry sees that his doctor is just a first captain and orders to have a major give him a second look. This shoes that Henry knows about the ranks. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love because she wants to feel secure with him. He lies to her to satisfy her and so she won't think he'll leave her for another woman. I think she would think less of him if he told her the truth because she wants him to lie to her. Catherine gets very attaches to Henry ans she wants him to love her. Fergy is a nurse and a good friend of Catherine. She doesn't really like Henry because she thinks he is going to hurt her. Catherine is against getting married because she would not be able to stay in the hospital or see Henry until after the war. Neither Henry or Catherine are very religious. Henry has changed since the beginning of the novel. He is less selfish because he doesn't just think about himself anymore, he has Catherine. Henry loses his convalescent leave by getting jaundice from drinking. Catherine reveals to Henry that she is about 3 months pregnant. They also talk about writing letters, in code, so the sensors can't read them.
ReplyDeleteHenry and miss van campen definitely have clashing personalities. The barber is rude to Henry because he thinks he is an Austrian. Before his accident he isn't in love with Catherine like he is now. Catherine's friend Fergy is always at odds with Henry, because she doesn't approve of their affair. Fergy is never afraid to express her opinion about this subject to Catherine...or Henry for that matter. Henry is more caring and less selfish because he has Catherine to think about now. He loses his convalescent leave due to his drinking/jaundice problem.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen’s relationship is a little rough. They don’t see eye-to-eye which makes it hard for them to come to an agreement. Because the Porter led the barber to believe the Henry was an Australian officer he is hostile to Henry. When Henry sees Catherine he is so happy and excited. After all that has happened to him he couldn’t be happier to see his love. When Henry tries to look as his wound he quickly turns his head away and describes it as raw meat. I haven’t experience any serious injury like Henry’s, but I think he didn’t want to look at it because it would have seemed worse than it really was and may have brought back bad memories he was trying to heal mentally and physically from. The surgeon’s advice to Henry is to stay off of it for six months and then have surgery on it. Catherine asks Henry about his past love. She does this to find out if she is just someone to have or if his feelings are true. I think that Henry lies to Catherine because he was afraid that if he told her the truth she would have left him. From what we know about the loving Catherine-I don’t think she would have thought any less of Henry if he would have told her the truth. While Henry is injured, Catherine is very loving, nurturing and helpful to her love. Fergy is Catherine’s fellow nurse. Fergy is pleased with both Henry, Catherine, and their relationship. Catherine doesn’t want to get married right now because she doesn’t want to be alone while Henry is gone at war. Both Catherine and Henry have no religion. Ever since Henry has had Catherine he has become less selfish. When Ms. Van Campen finds alcohol in Henry’s cabinet and comes to the conclusion that he has been forcing jaundice upon himself Henry loses his convalescent leave. One day, Catherine tells Henry that she is pregnant with his child. Before Henry leaves Catherine and he talk about leaving the country and starting a new life together as a family.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen do not like each other and have clashing personalities. Henry is more mellow and relaxed, while Miss Van Campen is uptight and strict. The barber is hostile to Henry because he confuses Henry to be an Austrian soldier. Henry's reaction to seeing Catherine is he now knows he is deeply in love with her. He is overjoyed and relieved to finally see her again. When Henry sees his wound he compares it to ground up meat and finds it to be disgusting. Personally, I have not had as grueling as an experience as this so I have nothing to compare it to. The surgeon advices Henry to wait 6 months before operating on his knee. However, he wants a second opinion because he does not want to wait that long. This shows that he is not a patient person and does not like to be lazy and wait around. Catherine wants to know about Henry's past love so she can trust him and feel secure in their relationship. I think Henry lies to her because he does not want Catherine to think he will leave her or that he is playing her. I believe Catherine might have thought less of him if he did tell the truth. She would be hurt and not feel as special to him. Fergy is a nurses aide who works at the American hospital and is a good friend of Catherine's. She does not like Henry because she is afraid he will hurt Catherine. I also believe she is a little jealous of their relationship and it makes her feel lonely seeing them. Catherine is opposed to getting married because she is afraid they will get split up if they do and she does not want something to happen to Henry when he goes to war. Henry and Catherine do not have religious views. I believe Henry has become less selfish than at the beginning of the novel. He thinks more of others and puts Catherine before himself. Henry loses his convalescent leave due to getting jaundice from drinking so much, however before he leaves for war Catherine reveals that she is pregnant. They also talk about their future and what will happen when he returns from war. She reassures him that he should not worry.
ReplyDeleteHenry doesn't directly associate his wound with his leg- he associates it's appearance with raw hamburger meat. People often do this to protect themselves from freaking out at the sight of their own mangled body. The first surgeon tells Henry that he needs to wait 6 months before he can operate. Henry wants a second opinion because he cannot lie in bed for six months waiting. Fergy is a nurse that is a mutual friend of Catherine's and Henry's. Henry likes her because she 'knows' but does not say anything to get himself and Catherine in trouble.Catherine does not want to get married because she fears she will be sent away and won't be able to see Genry anymore. Neither Henry nor Catherine are religious. Henry gets jaundice from drinking alcohol. The big news Catherine gives Henry just before he leaves is that she is about 3 months pregnant.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Lt. Henry and Miss Van Campen is awkward and tense. She doesn't really care for Henry, but leaves him be for most of the time for Cathrine to take care of. It's obvious that the two don't care for each other and would rather not be in either one's presence if it need not be. Catherine is like the mediator between the two and creates a comforting barrier between them during most of their quarrels. The barber, on the other hand, is hostile towards Henry because he believes that he is an Austrian soldier and doesn't take kindly to them as well as Henry would have liked. He has a sarcastic bite to his words as he exchanges conversation with Henry during his haircut, though Henry himself has a lack of care towards his harsh words and tries not to take it to heart.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen are not like magnets. They are complete opposites and do not attract. Henry is a very laid back soldier while Miss Van Campen is all up in your business and strict. The barber is mean and rude to Henry because he believes that Henry is an Austrian officer. Henry is very excited when he sees Catherine and falls in love with her at her sight. Henry's knee was still very badly injured and was described as "raw meat." Just the thought of that makes both of my knees hurt. It is advised that Henry stay off of his leg for at least 6 months and then they will go into surgery to fix it. Catherine tries to find out more about Henry's past loves and Henry lies to her to keep her from getting hurt. Catherine takes very good care of Henry and does whatever is needed to keep him getting better. Alcohol is found and Henry is stripped of his leave. Catherine then tells Henry that she is pregnant with his child and they begin to ponder the possibility of leaving the country.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not like each other. The barber is hostile with Henry because he mistakely believes that Henry is an Austrian officer. When Henry sees Catherine for the first time in Milan he falls madly in love with her. Henry does not want to see his injuries because he is afraid of what they could mean. The first doctor that comes to see Henry tells Henry to wait six months to have the operation that Henry needs. However Henry doubts the doctors skills because he brings two other doctors in the room to aid in examining Henry. Catherine asks Henry about his history to know who else Heny has been with. Henry lies to Catherine to please her because he knows that Catherine would not feel as special if she knew the truth about the other women he has been with. Catherine acts like a loving wife toward Henry. Fergy is a nurse friend of Catherine but she does not like Henry because of the situations that he puts Catherine in. Catherine does not want to marry Henry while in Milan because then she would be sent away. Neither Catherine or Henry have a religion. Since the beginning of the novel Henry has grown up and cares for others besides himself. He lost his convalescent leave because he contracted jaundice from drinking too much. Before Henry leaves Catherine tells him that she is three months pregnant. They also discuss their future relationship and plans for when he returns.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not like each other, Henry finds her to be am extremely hostile, grouchy woman. The barber is hostile with Henry because he mistakes Henry for an Austrian officer/the enemy, which is why out of fear he threatens to slit his throat. When Henry sees Catherine for the first time in the hospital he falls madly in love with her contrary to his first thoughts of her from there their relationship takes off. Henry does not want to look at his injuries because he is afraid of what they will bring him. In our minds as humans we tend to think for the worst, so instead of looking at our injuries head on with no fear we tend to see lots of different outcomes all seeming extremely horrible. The first house doctor that comes to examine Henry tells him he will have to regain the fluid in his knees before he does anything, which is estimated to take about six months. Henry asks for a second opinion because he is too impatient to wait that long and highly doubts the doctor’s opinions. Basically by doctors assessment of Henry's condition and his plan for surgery Henry thinks he is pretty much a quack and doubts any experience or knowledge he has. Henry lies to Catherine about his past relationships because he knows she would not feel as special to be with him if she knew the truth. Catherine treats Henry like they are a married couple, even though she refuses to marry him because then she will be sent away from her job, and separated from Henry. Fergy is another nurse that works at the hospital with Catherine, she is not completely fond with Henry only because of the way he treats Catherine. In her eyes Catherine does everything for Henry but he does very little when Catherine needs him. Henry lost his convalescent leave because he contracted jaundice. So he and Catherine did not get to spend his leave together. Before Henry leaves Catherine tells him she is three months pregnant. Henry does not really respond to this in any way, Catherine expects him to freak out or become extremely angry but he reacts in no way at all. Henry and Catherine also talk about their possible plans in the future.
ReplyDeleteThe barber is rude to Henry because there was a slight misinterpretation, the barber thought Henry was an Austrian officer. When Henry sees Catherine again he falls deeply in love with her. As for Fergy, who is Catherine's friend, doesn't seem to have any good feelings for Henry. She is not very fond of the entire relationship and is afraid that Henry will land Catherine in some sort of trouble. When Henry is diagnosed with jaundice, because of his drinking habits, the many bottles of alcohol were confiscated; Henry was striped of his leave and forced to suffer it out. Before Henry leaves, Catherine drops the bomb that she is three months pregnant.
ReplyDeleteCatherine ponders Henry's past loves to assure herself (even if she is not his first love) that Henry truly loves her. Henry lies about his love from the past because he can sense her curiosity and insecurity in their relationship. To avoid confrontation and discouragement of their relationship, Henry lies to Catherine in order for her to stay with him. Catherine would not necessarily think less of Henry but think less of their time spent together and their relationship.
ReplyDeleteCatherine is opposed to marrying Henry because she knows that she would be moved to a different unit. Only few people know about their love affair and if the wrong people found out through their marriage, Catherine and Henry would be split apart. Although Henry and Catherine are not married legally, they view each other as husband and wife already. In fact, Catherine consistently asks Henry if she makes a good wife. As the time approaches for leave, Henry becomes infected with jaundice due to his “alcoholism” according to Miss Van Campen and is refused leave. Towards the end of Book Two, Henry is surprised with the news of a baby from Catherine. At this point in the novel, Henry proves his grown maturity. In the beginning of the novel, Henry could be depicted as a selfish and immature man not looking for love but for affection. As his relationship with Catherine becomes more serious and Henry learns he will have a baby, he shows that he can love and care for someone other than himself.
Henry and Miss Van Campen do not like each other. Miss Van Campen feels Henry is rude to her does not trust him for being in the Italian Army. Henry gets angry at her when she refuses to order wine for him. The barber acts hostile towards Henry because he believes Henry is an Austrian. When Henry sees Catherine again, he truly knows that he is in love with her. Henry describes that his wound looks like hamburger meat. The surgeon advises Henry to wait six months before operating on his knee, but Henry will not wait that long. Henry also wants a major, not a captain, to do the operation and asks for a second opinion. Dr. Valentini becomes Henry’s new doctor and does the surgery right away. Henry is very knowledgeable about the rankings and will not settle for anything but the best. Henry lies to Catherine when she asks about his past love because he knows the truth would hurt her and she would think less of him if she knew the truth. Catherine’s behavior towards Henry is very loyal and she acts extra careful around him, afraid she might hurt him. Fergy is Catherine’s close friend that she works with. Fergy is not fond of Henry because she believes that Henry causes nothing but trouble for Catherine. Catherine does not want to get married at the moment because she is afraid she will be sent away. Neither Catherine nor Henry are religious. Since the beginning of the novel, Henry has become less selfish. Henry loses his leave because he gave himself jaundice due to heavy drinking. Before Henry leaves, Catherine tell him she is pregnant. The two then talk about their future with the baby.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Lt. Henry and Miss Van Campen is not a very good one. Their personalities are complete opposites and from the start the didn't like each other. The barber is hostile toward Henry because he mistook Henry for an Austrian soldier. When Henry sees Catherine again, he is extremely happy and knows for sure now that he is love with her. When Henry first sees his wound he describes it as looking like ground up meat and is completely disgusted. I have never experienced anything similar to this so I can't imagine what it would be like. The surgeon suggests to Henry that he wait about 6 months before he gets surgery. Henry demands a second opinion because he hates the idea of being stuck in a bed for that long. This shows that Henry is impatient and needs to be doing something. I think Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves because she still isn't quit sure if he truly loves her or not. When Henry lies about his past loves I think it shows Catherine, even though she knows he is lying, that he cares about her enough to lie so he won't hurt her feelings. I don't think Catherine would think less of Henry if he told the truth, but she just wants to know that their relationship means more to him than any of his previous ones. Fergy is a friend of Catherine's who is also a nurse. She does not like Henry because she is afraid he will hurt Catherine. Catherine does not want to get married to Henry right now because she is afraid that they would get split up. I think Henry has changed a lot since the beginning of the novel. He is definitely less selfish and has learned what it's like to care about someone other than himself. Henry loses his convalescent leave because he gets jaundice on account of his drinking problem and Miss Van Campen reports him. Before Henry leaves, Catherine informs him that she is pregnant and they talk about their future when he returns. Henry is worried about Catherine and doesn't want to leave her but she assures him that she'll be okay.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is very unfriendly. You can tell that they both don't like eachother and that they're not going to hide it. The barber is fairly hostile toward Henry because he believes that Henry is an Austrian, the enemy. When Henry saw Catherine for the first time in awhile he realizes that he is in love with her. When Henry sees his wounds for the first time he is mortified and disgusted because it looks like ground up meat. I've had an experience like this when I looked at stitches in the back of my jaw for when I got my wisdom teeth out. It looked disgusting, red, and it didn't feel very well. I believe we act like this because the thought of something missing on our bodies mortifies us. The surgeon tells Henry that he should have surgery in 6 months. However, Henry doesn't want to wait this long and demands a second opinion. Catherine wants to know about Henrys past loves because she isn't sure if he loves her. I think that Catherine would think less of him, even though she shouldn't. If she knew I think she would think less of him, which isn't fair. She was in love with another man once and she would be quite upset if she found out Henry was in love once, which is very hypocritical. Catherines mood toward Henry is very clingy in my opinion. She wants him to tell her she's lovely and that he loves her. Fergy is a friend of Catherines and she doesn't like Henry very much. She believes that he can get Catherine in a lot of trouble from sneeking around at night or that he will hurt Catherine. Catherine doesn't want to get married because she is afraid they will get separated and then she will be stuck all alone with the baby. I think Henry has changed alot since the beginning because he's not very selfish anymore and he's not afraid to fall for Catherine. Henry loses his convalescent leave because Miss Van Campen reports him after getting jaundice from drinking too much. Catherine informs Henry that she is 3 months pregnant and they discuss their future.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen have a mtual dislike for each other. They dislike each other because Miss Van Campen will not let Henry drink without the doctor's order. The barber is hostile to Henry because he had a misunderstanding and believed he was an Austrian, not an American. When Henry gets to see Catherine again he is more certain that he has feelings for her, if not completely love her. The surgeon's advice for him was to wait at least six months before a surgery. Henry wants a second opinion because he cannot stand to be in bed for such an extended amount of time. This reveals that Henry is impatient and would rather be doing something constantly.I think that the reason that Catherine wants to know about Henry's past loves because she is worried if he really loves her or not. I think that he lies to her only to keep her happy, if he were to tell her it would probably make her feel crushed. If he told the truth I don't think that Catherine would think any less of him, simply because she loves him. Catherine's behavior to Henry is reserved to a point. She knows that she is in her workplace so she has to be careful, but still wants to be with him. Fergy is one of Catherine's friend who is a nurse as well. She does not particularly like Henry because she thinks that he will end up breaking her friend's heart. Catherine is opposed to getting married right now because she knows that they will most likely be separated from each other. Neither Catherine nor Henry are very religious. Henry loses his convalescent leave because his drinking problem causes him to get jaundice and gets reported by Miss Van Campen. Before Henry leaves, Catherine reveals to him that she is three months along with their child. They also talk about their future together when he returns.
ReplyDeleteMiss Van Campen and Lt. Henry despise each other. She feels Henry is rude and arrogant, and that he doesn't belong in the Italian army. The barber is hostile towards Henry because he mistaken Henry as an Austrian solider, which is the enemy. When Henry sees Catherine, he was overjoyed to see her again and knew that he fell in love with her. Henry looked at his wounds and quickly looked away. He was frightened of what he would see. Typically people don't look at their wounds because we fear the worst just happened. With that mindset, people tend to believe that their injury could be the difference between life and death, but in reality, it only needs a few stitches. The first surgeon wants Henry to stay in bed for six months for the fluid to get to his knee before they operate on it. Henry wants a second opinion because the surgeon was only a first captain. This reveals that Henry is impatient and needs to do something productive. It also reveals that rank makes a difference to him. Catherine asks Henry about his past love life because she still had doubts whether or not he truly loved her. He lied to her because he knew that if he told her the truth that she wouldn't feel as special to him, even though Henry is in love with her. Catherine treats Henry as though they were married. She does everything she can to make him happy. Fergy is a nurse at the hospital, but also a friend of Catherine. She isn't fond of Henry because she's afraid he will treat her badly. Catherine doesn't want to get married because if they were to, she wouldn't be able to work at the hospital and they would be split apart from each other. Both Catherine and Henry are not religious. From the beginning of the novel, Henry has become less selfish and started to care more about others. Henry lost his convalescent leave when he contracted jaundice, Miss Van Campen insisted that he got it from drinking alcohol. So she reported him to the doctor. One evening, Catherine told Henry that she was three months pregnant with his child. Before Henry left to go back to the front, they talk about where she'll have the baby, future trips, and where they will live.
ReplyDeleteBook Two begins when Henry has been moved to a new hospital in Milan. Henry's experience did not begin very well. The hospital was not caring for a single patient. However, the only nurse on duty would not allow Henry to get a room. After everything was straightened out, Henry was in the comfort of his own hospital room with the care of two nurses but no doctor. After the doctor's arrival he decides to call upon a group of three doctors to advise Henry of the best route to take for his injury. The surgeons tell Henry that he must be on crutches for six months and following the six months will be an operation. This news does not satisfy Henry.
ReplyDeleteAfter the news of the healing process Henry's strong-will becomes evident. Henry demands to hear the opinion of another doctor by demanding multiple times, "Could another surgeon see it?" (Hemingway 98) This quote said by Henry shows determination and will to continue with his life in the army as well as his future with Catherine Barkley.
The relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is mutual, they do not like each other. The barber is hostile towards Henry simply because he thought Henry was an Austrian officer, but really he is fighting with the Italians, just a misunderstanding. When he see’s Catherine again he acts like a kid walking into FAO Schwarz, madly in love with everything that is in his sight, he finally realized he truly was madly in love with her. All it took was some time. When he looks at his wounds to his knees, he doesn’t want to know what’s truly wrong and doesn’t want to believe what he is seeing. I’ve had a similar thing with my knee, not being wounded of course but, with my knee cap and knowing that if it got worse I couldn’t dance again unless I either went through surgery or physical therapy. But I kept putting off the pain thinking it was something I tweeked or twisted and it would heal, but it still hurts after 3 years now. Humans do this naturally because of fear of what could be coming. And he didn’t want to know what was wrong simply because of fear of not being able to do what he liked to do in the war. Catherine wants to know about Henrys pasts loves to see if he has ever loved or stayed with another woman to see if she can be the first girl he has loved. He lies to her to please her again and he is afraid of what would have happened if he told the truth and he could have lost her and he doesn’t want that. To me, I don’t think Catherine would have thought any less of him if she truly loved him for who he is. When you get into a relationship you have to not always like, but accept things that the person has done and get on with it and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Not everyone is perfect. Her behavior towards him is sort of like a marriage. They don’t want to legally get married because she could be sent back to Scotland and they could possibly never see each other ever again. Fergy is Catherines friend who is also a nurse at the hospital. She isn’t very fond of Henry. Since Catherine, he’s starting to think of more than just his self. He losses his convalescent leave due to being jaundice from drinking too much. Right before he leaves again, She drops some news… She’s three months pregnant. Before he leaves they talk about where they will have the baby and if he will be home.
ReplyDeleteIn book two the reader gets a better grasp upon the characters and their attributes and values along with getting deeper into the storyline. In the opening of this book, the reader discovers the mutual loathing between Henry and Miss Van Campen (the superintendent of the American hospital in Milan). The next conflict Henry faces is with the barber. The barber comes off as crazy when he acts just downright rude and threatening towards Henry while cutting the lieutenants hair. After the appointment Henry discovers that the barber was actually not crazy he just acted inappropriately because the porter told him that Henry was an enemy Austrian. Henry’s hardships are quickly relieved when he sees Catherine Barkley again. When Henry and Mrs. Barkley finally reunite , Henry is filled with joy and is brought to the realization that he is in love. Through their time together in Milan, the couple falls only deeper in love. Soon Catherine becomes curious and questions Henry about his past loves. He lies to her about sleeping with other woman because he wants Catherine to think of herself as his one and only. However, he could of told her the truth about it because she would not have cared as long as she knew he did not love any other woman (which was true because he had only slept with, not loved, other woman). Despite this great love, the two do not get legally married at this point in the novel. Catherine already considers them spiritually married and does not feel the need to get into the legal aspects of the matter. Plus, if they were married, Catherine would not be allowed to stay and care for Henry she would be shipped elsewhere. Religion also comes into play. Neither of them have a formal religious status so the religious strategics behind marriage do not apply to them. Thus, Catherine considers Henry her religion and Henry considers Catherine his religion.
ReplyDeleteAnother key element in book two though is Henry’s injuries, as he is in the hospital for such reason. The first surgeon that comes to fix Henry’s leg injury tells Henry that he will have to wait six months before his knee can be operated on. As he is unable to wait for such a extensive time period, Henry gets a second opinion. The second surgeon thinks Henry is ready for surgery and operates on him right away, despite the advice of the first surgeon. This reveals Henry’s impatience.
After reading book two the reader gets a better grasp on Henry’s character and becomes aware of his personal growth. After Henry learns to love he becomes less selfish and more focused on his significant other, Catherine. Henry’s injury also forces him to settle down and relax giving him time to think things over and mature. Overall, Henry's character faces immense positive change.
I definitely agree with Emilie. After I finished book two, I felt I saw a side of Henry that wasn't introduced in Book One. I think Catherine helped him open up tremendously. You get to know the good side of him, and the bad one. The good one is that he does become less selfish, and he begins to care about Catherine. He becomes more mature in a lot of ways, and he actually comes to the realization that he is in love with Catherine. A couple not so good things are that he drinks so much, which is one of the main reasons why Miss Van Campen doesn't like him so much, and we realize that he is an impatient when he asks for a second surgeon who will operate sooner. He also lies to Catherine about sleeping with other women.
DeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen both give each other the cold shoulder during the duration of Henry's stay. The barber mistook Henry for an Austrian officer so he showed hostility towards Henry. Henry is now in love with Catherine when they see each other again. Henry didn't want to look at his wound because he feared the worst has happened. His brain did that to him because that's how the human brain works. Henry demands to get a second opinion after the first news of his road to recovery didn't please him. Catherine wants to hear of Henry's past loves to see if he can be trusted but he lies to her so Catherine won't see him any differently. Fergy does not approve of Henry because she thinks he's there for the wrong reasons. Catherine doesn't want to get married yet because they would soon be separated when she left Italy. Because of his love interest Henry becomes less selfish. He loses his leave because the nurses think his jaundice was done on purpose to get a longer leave. Before she leaves, Catherine tells Henry that she is pregnant and they discuss their future together.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen have a strong disliking for each other: Henry sees Miss Van Campen as snooty and uptight, while Miss Van Campen sees Henry as rude and does not approve of him being with the Italians. The barber also acts hostile towards Henry, for seemingly no reason. Henry later discovers that the barber mistook what the porter said and thought that Henry was an Austrian soldier. Henry is extatic to see Catherine again, and realizes that he now has deeper feelings for her; Henry says that he desperately wanted not to fall in love with Catherine, but indeed has.
ReplyDeleteWhen Henry looks at his wound, he compares it to ground hamburger meat. I have never had a serious wound before, but I believe that people may think these types of things because they naturally try to make sense of the situation by comparing their own flesh to something they know very well. The surgeon tells Henry that he will have to wait six months before they can perform an operation, but Henry asks for a second opinion. This may suggest that Henry is impatient, and also that he prefers to take orders from men of higher ranks (the surgeon was only a first captain). I feel that Catherine asked Henry about his past loves to see if he was capable of loving one person deeply and committedly. Henry lied to her, most likely because he did not want Catherine to see him as a man that she could not trust with her love. I think that Catherine would not have thought less of Henry had he told her the truth (she seems to suspect that he is lying, but still loves him). Catherine appears to be extremely eager to please Henry, and she often asks him to reassure her that she is being good to him. Fergy is an aid at the hospital where Henry is staying, and is also a good friend of Catherine. Fergy dislikes Henry because she is very protective of Catherine, and thinks that Henry does not truly love Catherine and will break her heart. Catherine does not want to marry Henry because this would cause her to be sent back to Scotland, and they would be apart until after the war. Catherine feels that they are already married in an emotional sense, and does not care about the legal part of the connection. Also, Catherine and Henry are not religious, and do not think marriage to be as important as a religious couple might. Catherine claims that Henry is her religion, and Henry claims that Catherine is his. I feel that Henry is less selfish than he is in the beginning of the novel, as he actually cares for Catherine now, and does not simply want her out of sexual desire. Henry loses his convalescent leave when Miss Van Campen blames his heavy drinking for his jaundice affliction. Before book two ends, Catherine reveals to Henry that she is going to have a child. Catherine and Henry reminisce on where they will have the baby, as well as what they plan to do with their future.
Henry and Ms.Van Campen do not like each other at all from the very start and are often at odds with one another. The barber is very hostile to Henry because he is told he is on the opposite side by accident. When Henry sees Catherine again it is obvious he really does have feelings for her now and is not just playing games.Henry chooses not to look at his wound at first because like many of us he is scared to see that the damage will be too great for him to come back from.Henry is told by the first doctor that he will have to be in a wheel chair for a long time, but this is not what he wants to hear so he gets a second opinion which he likes better. When Catherine asks Henry about his past it is obvious she likes his lies better than what she knows to be true.Fergy is another nurse at the hospital who befriends Catherine.Henry seems to be less selfish and willing to make Catherine happy by any means necassary.Catherine reveals to Henry that she is pregnant, and they talk about where she will have the baby if he is still in the war.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen don't like each other. The barber mistakes Henry for an Austrian officer (the Austrians being the enemy to them). When Henry sees Catherine again, it seems that he subliminally has been developing real feelings of love for her. When Henry first sees his wound he reacts in a stable manner, even though he is revolted at the sight of his own gore. I've never been injured that badly, so I cannot fully relate to this. The surgeon wants to wait six months to take action, but Henry wants another opinion to try and get his injury resolved as soon as he can. Catherine wants reassurance and to know Henry won't leave her. When she asks Henry about any former love, he lies and says no to keep her comforted and prevent her from being unsure about everything. Catherine then acts like a wife towards Henry, tending to him and caring for him, and they vow to be "married", but without the actual ceremony/paperwork/etc. The two of them don't believe in religion. I perceive Henry's newly-developed alcoholism as being a selfish act, but other than that, he has become far less selfish in other aspects. His alcoholism, and jaundice are also what causes him to lose his convalescent leave from duty. Catherine also slips in the fact that she is now pregnant, and they discuss where they'll meet after the war is over.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen do not get along with one another and are often quarrelling with one another. When the barber meets Henry he is hostile towards him because his mistakes him for an Austrian, and the Austrians at the time were at odds with the Italians. When Henry and Catherine are reunited Henry realizes that he loves her. Catherine then begins to inquire about Henry’s past lovers because she wants to make sure that he loves her. Henry lies to Catherine to reassure her of his love for her. Catherine begins to do all she can to nurse Henry back to health as would a doting mother or loving wife. The pair decide that they are already married as neither has any religious convictions. Catherine then proceeds to tell Henry that she is pregnant. However, the pair is separated due to the revocation of Henry’s convalesant leave due to his “self-inflicted” jaundice due to his alcoholism.
ReplyDeleteMiss Van Campen and Henry do not get along at all, Miss Van Campen often complains to Miss Gage about Henry or storms out of his room. The barber is hostile to Henry because he thinks he is an Austrian officer. When Henry sees Catherine again, he falls in love with her against his will. The surgeon wants Henry to wait six months for a knee surgery, but Henry doesn't want to lay around that long and demands for a second opinion. Catherine questions Henry about his past loves because she just wants more reassurance that he loves her. Henry lies to her so that she doesn't get hurt by it. Catherine probably wouldn't think less of him because it seems that she can pick up on his lies. Catherine is jealous of the other nurses touching Henry, and only wants him for herself. Catherine is opposed to marriage because she thinks she will be sent back to Scotland for it. Neither of them have a religious view. Henry loses his convalescent leave because of Miss Van Campen finding his alcohol and claims he has created self-inflicted jaundice. Catherine confides into Henry that she is pregnant, about three months along.
ReplyDeleteMiss Van Campen and Lt. Henry do not get along whatsoever. Miss Van Campen is rude to him, and complains about him to the other nurses. Henry is usually rude back to her. The barber is hostile to Henry because he thinks he is an Austrian officer. When Henry sees Catherine again, he can't help but fall in love with her. When Henry sees the wound on his knee, he relates it to ground hamburger. I think that humans do this because the like to relate things to other objects. The surgeons advice was to wait six months to have a surgery, but he doesn't want to wait that long, and he doesn't trust the opinion of a first captain. He wanted to get a second opinion on it. Catherine inquires about his past loves and relationships so that she can be reassured of his love for her. Henry lies so she doesn't think lowly of him, and continues to like him. Catherine knows he is lying to her. Catherine tries to stay with Henry as much as she can because she doesn't want any of the other nurses to touch him. Fergy and Henry are friends, and have a civil relationship. Catherine is opposed to marriage because she knows that if she gets married, she will get sent back to Scotland. Henry and Catherine don't have any religious views. Henry becomes less selfish. Henry loses his leave because Miss Van Campen finds his empty alcohol bottles hidden under his bed and says that self-inflicted jaundice is no reason to continue to be on convalescent leave. Catherine reveals to Henry that she is about three months pregnant.
ReplyDeleteCatherine doesn't want to get married because the hospital will ship her away from Henry and she doesnt want that. Catherine gets very tired of working the night shifts and henry tells her to go home and take a couple days off so she does. After that they usually spent every night together cuddling in his small hospital bed. Henry is told that he needs to wait a while before surgery by his first doctor, he is very supset. So he asks another doctor and is able to have surgery the next day.
ReplyDeleteHenry and Miss Van Campen both dislike each other. Miss Van Campen is strict and does not want Henry drinking alcohol. The barber misinterprets what the porter tells him and thinks that Henry is an Austrian soldier. When Henry sees Catherine again, he thinks that Catherine looks incredibly beautiful and realizes that he loves her. The first time Henry saw the wound at the field hospital, it “had the look of not too freshly ground hamburger steak.” Now the wound is much better. The surgeon wants to wait six months before operating. Henry does not want to sit around for six months so he gets a second opinion. This reveals that Henry is impatient and does not like waiting. Henry lies to Catherine about his past love because he wants her to believe that he loves her and will not leave her. Catherine states that she wants Henry to lie to her about his past love. She would think that Henry might not love her if he told the truth. Catherine is kind and caring for Henry and does whatever he wants. Fergy is Helen Ferguson, one of Catherine’s friends. She is also a nurse. Fergy is friendly to Henry. Catherine does not want to get married right now because she is afraid she will be separated from Henry. Neither Catherine nor Henry belongs to a religion. Henry has changed. He really loves Catherine now and cares about her. Henry loses his leave because Miss Van Campen finds his empty alcohol bottles and blames his alcoholism for his jaundice. She accuses Henry of purposefully causing his illness so he would not have to return to the front. Catherine reveals that she is three months pregnant. Henry and Catherine talk about where Catherine will have the baby and how she will arrange it.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is tense because she seems suspicious and snooty, while he comes across as rude. The barber is also not fond of Henry because he mistakenly believed he was an Austrian officer. When Henry finally sees Catherine again, he feels crazy with love. Just a day later, he receives the disheartening news that it will be six months before operations can begin on his knee. He wants a second opinion so that he can get back to a more functional life as soon as possible. This reveals a determined, spirited side of Henry that has not been revealed before. Catherine begins questioning Henry about past loves so that she can feel secure in their relationship. Catherine would not think less of him if he had not lied because she doesn't necessarily want the truth, but a reassurance in them. Fergy is one of Catherine's nurse friends and is very protective. She at first treats Henry with anger but settles down to be his friend. Catherine is opposed to marrying Henry right now because she is afraid of being sent away and not seeing him until the war is over. They are not a religious couple and put all the faith they need in each other. Henry loses his covalescent leave because people believe that his alcohol obsession gave him self-inflicted jaundice. Before he has to go back to the front, Catherine reveals that she is pregnant.
ReplyDeleteLt. Henry and Miss Van Campen are almost like mother and child. Henry tries to go against rules and is caught a punished by the nurse. The barber is hostile towards Henry ,though, because he is informed ,falsely, that Henry is an enemy. But these feelings are polar opposite compared to the new found feelings Henry holds for Catherine. Once he played games of love to keep them entertained, but now its clear that these games are reality. Besides his change in love, we see a change in Henry's strength. Until now Henry has been just a guy in the war. But he fights one surgeons opinion because the doctor told Henry operations would have to be months away. Henry didn't like that and wanted to be back to work sooner. Besides the change in strength, his love change is shown with Catherine. Henry makes Catherine feel that she is the only women he has ever loved. While it's not entirely true, it is true that she is his true love.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Henry and Miss Van Campen is a mutual dislike for each other mainly because of the difference in personalities as Henry is somewhat childish in his decisions and is care-free while Miss Van Campen is very strict and practical in her decisions. This difference in personalities drives the dislike between the two. The barber that Henry meets is also hostile towards Henry because he believes that Henry is an Austrian officer. When Henry sees Catherine at the hospital in Milan after his injury and becomes obsessed with and falls in love with her as he spends his days oly thinking about her. Henry is very scared and disgusted with what his knee has become due to the mortar. Henry wants to heal as soon as possible so he can re-enter the war and receives a second opinion on his leg which results in his surgery being done immediately instead of waiting 6 more monthes. When Catherine asks Henry about his past love life Catherine tests Henry to see if he is true. Henry lies about this because he does not want to let down Catherine and have her think less of him. Fergy is another nurse in the hospital and does not really care for Henry. Catherine does not want to get married right away because she would have to leave Italy. I believe that Henry has changed his mindset somewhat at this point. He now has Catherine to think about and although Henry still of himself most importantly he he started to think of others more and more. Henry then loses his leave because he develops jaundice from his constant drinking. Before Henry does leave Catherine reveals that she is pregnant and they talk about their together after the war.
