  1. When Henry returns to the villa the mood that surrounds it is one of someone who is defeated and tired. What has been going on while Henry was away was that there was a bad summer, many are wounded, and they lost several cars. Rinaldi has changed a lot since Henry has last seen him, he's more of a drunk now. Also when Rinaldi is drunk he turns into one of those angry drunks who try to start a fight with everyone. With the priest now, the soliders used to try and bait him to get under his skin. Now when the soliders bait the priest he just lets it go and continues on with what he is doing as if nothing happened. The priest also seems to be more sure with himself when he speaks of the war and what he thinks is going to happen. The Italians order a retreat because they know that the Germans are slowly upon them and they do not want that to happen. Henry's role in the retreat is to help move hospital supplies from where they currently are to another camp. The retreat is slow at first and mainly they are just trying to get the wounded out first and then everything next. Piani and Aymo and call themselves anarchists an socialists because they do not believe in a formal government and it they wish that it wouold be that each city or whatever rules itself and has their own rules. Henry goes across the bridge first because he knows that if its mined that it will blow up when the first person steps on it. What this shows about his personality is that he would be willing to die before on of his friends does in place of him. Henry is angry when he sees the German staff car and bicyclists because that means that none of the Italians have taken care of a threat that is near to them. Also because the Germans blew up a smaller bridge down the hill but left the bigger bridge intact. Aymo is the first to die. Henry's reaction to Aymos death is shocked because that could've been him or anybody else and the Germans weren't the ones who fired the shot, the Italians fired the shot. Henry almost gets killed by the Battle Police. The Battle Police thought that Henry was a Italian solider who deserted the army and was to be killed for doing so. Henry escaped by pushing thorugh some officers and heading towards the river, where he escaped by holding onto a log floating downriver. As Henry is lying on the train, he thinks about how the guns hes's hiding with must've been sent ahead of the third army. He has changed so much because at first he was fighting in the army and for the cause of the war. But now he is labled as a derseter and could be arrested at any moment. His feelings on the war right now is that he wished it was over and that he could return to a normal life.

  2. Henry returns to a very discouraged and dreary villa. While he was gone, many soldiers became sick and they lost three cars. Rinaldi has become very depressed since Henry was gone because he doesn't operate now and has nothing to do. Rinaldi also drinks heavier than he used to. The priest is not affected by the teasing he gets from the officers anymore. The Italians prepare to retreat because they hear the Germans have broken through the lines. Henry is in charge of moving the ambulance and hospital equipment to another town. Henry crosses the bridge first in case the bridge is mined. It shows Henry is willing to risk himself to save his friends. Henry gets angry when he sees the German car pass because it means the Italians didn't cut them off like they should have. He is mad that the Italians didn't blow up the bridge to try and stop the Germans from advancing. Aymo get shot and dies while walking with the other drivers. Henry is upset because the shots came from Italians. Henry almost gets killed because the Battle Police pulled him aside because they thought he had abandoned his troops and were going to shoot him. He escapes by running into the river and floating away before they shoot him. Henry has changed because in the beginning of the story, he wanted to win the war but now, he doesn't care who wins. He just wants to be able to live happily with Catherine.

  3. The mood at the villa is somber and deflated. There were many losses and no victories, ambulances and people had been lost, and many people were at different posts than they were when he left. Rinaldi's attitude is the same as the other people's; dejected and flat. He also drinks more. The priest has become tougher and doesn't let anyone get to him in the mess hall anymore. The retreat is prepared because there is word that the Germans have broken through and will attack. Henry's job is to move equipment to the city they are going to. Henry crosses the bridge first when they are not sure if it is mined or not. This shows he is brave. He is mad when they see the German car because he knows that means the Italians didn't stop them like they were supposed to. Ayomo gets killed and Henry is shocked and upset. When the Battle Police are going to kill him, he escapes and jumps into the river and floats down until he can reach a bank. Henry is thinking of Catherine when he is in the train. He also realizes he doesn't care about the war anymore.

  4. Henry's homecoming is not what he had expected; it is very depressing and dreary. Hemingway describes the scene stating that "the mulberry trees were bare and the fields were brown... it had been raining in the mountains." (Pg 164) While talking to the Major at the Red Cross Hospital, Henry comes to discover that the damage had been very bad in that area, and that his friend Rinaldi was very busy with operations and such. Rinaldi has seemed to lose his old fun self operating seems to be the only thing taking Rinaldi's mind off from everything happening: "I don't operate now and I feel like hell." (Pg 167) Along with this, the priest has changed, gaining more self confidence. The Italians retreat because they fear the Germans overtaking them. Henry's role in the retreat is to transport all of the supplies needed from the hospital, and all of the wounded that seemed fit, to another safe location. The retreat consisted of Henry and his team evacuating two girls from Gorizia with Aymo making the situation awkward by upsetting the girls. Going along, their vehicle gets stuck in the mud. They end up pushing the car to an abandoned farmhouse; and yes, Aymo is allowed to bring his girls. Soon, they leave the house because some sergeants are giving them a hard time. The men's car ends up stuck in the mud again, this time leaving them to go on foot. While walking up the hill, Piani and Aymo exclaim that they are anarchists and socialists, meaning that they do not believe in a strong, structured government. They reach a river with a blown up small bridge. Being the guinea pig, Henry crosses first. By doing that, I think that he wanted to prove to the others that he was brave. He is angry to see the German staff car and bicyclists because he cannot believe that they got through. When Aymo is killed, Henry seems to be very calm about the matter, and collects his papers to write to his family. Henry is almost killed when he is mistaken for a German soldier incognito as an Italian one. He ends up sneaking out of the questioning line, grabbing a piece of driftwood, carrying him down the river to safety. As Henry lies in the train car, he thinks about his life and how the surgeon has done a good job on his knee. He tried his hardest not to think about Catherine because it would make him crazy; he didn't know if he would ever see her again. He also wondered if they would count him for dead. He also thinks about his friends: the priest and Rinaldi. Henry discovers that he despises the war, wanting to run away from it. Before, he wanted to gain a higher rank to make it his career.

    1. Henry's thoughts as he lies in the train car are what I was able to base one of my predictions for the end of the novel. He realizes in that moment how much he despises war and wants it to be over. At the end, people are predicting that Henry will reenlist. If he did, do you think it is because he wants to or he feels the need to? Or do you disagree and think that he will not return, knowing that he has seen enough of war?

  5. When Henry returns to the villa, everyone is depressed because the Italians are losing the war. Rinaldi is depressed and he thinks he has siphylis and has more of a drinking problem, and the priest has learned to take a joke from the men in the mess hall. The Italians prepare to retreat because they are losing, so Henry is required to bring all of the equipment from the hospital back with him, but they get sidetracked along the way and eventually stuck in the mud. They continue on foot and reach a bridge. Henry crosses it first because he is the bravest of their group. When Aymo is killed, Henry calmly collects his papers and then they continue on. Later, Henry is mistaken for a german spy but he escapes in the river. When he is on the train car he realizes that he hates the war and doesn't want to be a part of it anymore.

  6. When Henry returns to the villa the mood is sad and gloomy. Since Henry was away it was a bad summer and many were wounded during the war and they lost three cars. Rinaldi has become more of a drunk and depressed due to the bad summer. The priest becomes positive that the war will end soon. The priest also isn't affected by the teasing anymore and can ignore it. The Italians prepare to retreat because they learn the Germans are coming among the attackers. Also they learn that the Italian line has been broken causing them to retreat. Henry's role in the retreat is to move hospital supplies to the new location. The retreat consists of two girls, Henry, Piani, Aymo, and Bonello. When Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and socialists they mean that they don't believe in a strong central government. Henry crosses the bridge incase it is covered in mines. This shows that Henry is a strong leader, brave, and willing to put his soldiers before himself. Henry is angry when he sees the German staff car and bicyclists because the Italians didn't do anything to try to stop the Germans. Aymo gets killed which upsets Henry since his friend died. It also makes him realize that the Italians are just as dangerous as the Germans and decides to avoid them. Henry almost gets killed because the Battle Police pull him aside accusing him of abandoning his troops. While in a questioning line Henry escapes and jumps in a river. He flows down the river and is able to escape his death. As Henry lies in the train car he thinks about his life, the war, and his knee. Henry tries to avoid thinking about Catherine. He thinks about his friends as well and wondered if he would be considered dead. Henry has changed because hes went from a war hero to a person who has run away from war. At this time Henry despises the war and wants to go back home with Catherine.

  7. Upon Henry’s re-arrival at the villa everyone is dejected and upset. While he was out, his town had many people wounded and they are losing the war. Rinaldi acts just like everyone else, very down; on the other hand the Priest doesn’t let other people get to him anymore. Piani and Aymo say that they are socialists or anarchists. The two say this because they don’t follow the idea in a government that it should be controlled. When Henry is going across the bridge he goes first because he has the most courage, and isn’t afraid. In shock that the German staff gets through Henry is fuming. The one to get killed is Aymo. He is shot while walking. After the death, Henry remains calm and collects papers to write to his family. Later on Henry almost is killed too because the police accuse him off leaving his troops. He borrows a boat from a friend and heads away to stay safe. When Henry gets in the train car he begins thinking and pondering his thoughts. They consist of how much he resents the war, and his friends. He tries to avoid the subject of Catherine so he will not become sad. He doesn’t care anymore about having the victory of the war he just wants it to terminate.

  8. Depressed, desperate, and disheartened describes the feelings and emotions of the people at the villa. The only thing that Henry missed while he was gone is defeat. The major even said Henry was lucky to get hurt when he did because the troops there suffered a terrible summer. There is a countless number of sick people and materials, like cars, have been lost. Henry’s good friend, Rinaldi, is a heavy drinker now and when he was drunk he became quite mean, especially to the priest. The priest has changed too because he doesn’t take everything to heart and shrugs the harsh words off. A retreat on the Italian side began because the Germans crossed the line to attack. During this retreat, Henry is told by the major to bring cars and hospital materials to Bainsizza. The actual retreat includes Henry, Bonello, Aymo, Piani, and two ladies that they have rescued and also wanted to take along. They drive out of town in a large caravan moving very slowly. When Piani and Aymo talk about anarchists and socialists, they discuss that everyone should be a socialist and have ownership of their possessions. Henry takes one for the team when he goes over the bridge because it might be mined. He is willing to risk his life to help his friends. Next, Henry becomes fuming when he sees that there are German cars and bicyclists because he now believes the Italians didn’t do enough to try and hold back the German forces. Aymo then gets killed in the group and Henry feels bad since he genuinely liked Aymo. He handles the situation maturely, and takes his papers so he can write to his family. Henry almost gets killed when the Italian battle police want to shoot him for leaving his soldiers. He manages to escape by leaving at the right time and goes into the river. After getting out of the river, Henry jumps onto a train. He thinks about how he’ll probably never see Rinaldi or the priest again. Catherine also comes to mind and he misses her dearly. Henry isn’t as selfish as he used to be and cares more about others. Henry’s time with the war is now over.

  9. When Henry arrives back at the villa, the mood is depressing. All the cars are away since there are many sick people. It has gotten much worse since Henry left. The fighting is over for now. Rinaldi has become depressed from the war so he has been drinking more frequently becoming rude and mean. The priest has become stronger by not taking insults to heart, especially with Rinaldi. They were prepared to retreat because the Germans have broken through and they will be cut off. Henry's role is to take the hospital equipment and retreat to a new area. The people among the retreat consist of two girls from Gorizia, Aymo, Henry, Piani, and Bonello. It was raining a lot as they drove on. Aymo and Piani call themselves anarchists and socialists because they believe that everyone should be a socialist since they think it is so great. They think that the central government shouldn't be the center of power. Henry goes across the bridge first because the other men wanted him to go. This shows how brave and courageous he can be. Henry is angry that he sees the German car and the bicyclists because he realizes that nobody tried to stop the Germans from advancing. Aymo gets killed and although Henry is a little sad, he stays focused on their destination. Henry also has Aymo's papers in his pocket and he would write to Aymo's family. Henry almost gets killed by the Italian Battle Police who believe he abandoned his troops, so they order Henry to be shot. He escapes by running into the river when the other men looked at the colonel so they weren't paying attention to him. While Henry was on the train he began thinking of Catherine, the priest, Rinaldi, his knee, how hungry he was, the stars that used to be on his uniform, and where he would go. He has changed by caring for others rather than himself and becoming a little more wiser. Henry wanted to win the war before, but now he doesn't care who wins, he just wants it to end, so he can be with Catherine.

  10. The atmosphere when Henry returns to the villa is depressing and gloomy. Since Henry went away the Italian Army has been losing and has started to retreat. Rinaldi has become a heavy drinker and has become quite rude as well. The priest has changed because he no longer lets the constant taunting bother him anymore. The Italians prepare to retreat because the German army has crossed the line and started attacking. Henry has the role of transferring hospital supplies to the new location. The retreat starts off somewhat on a bad note. The men find themselves and their cars stuck in deep mud. On their way, the men find two young girls and let them tag along for some of the trip. When Piani and Aymo call themselves socialists and anarchists because they believe that the central government should not have total power and that people should have ownership of their things. Henry goes across the bridge first because it had the potential to be filled with mines. This shows how brave and caring Henry is for his friends and how he is willing to die for his friends. Henry is angry when he sees the German staff car and bicyclists because this is a sign that the Italian Army didn't do their job in stopping them from proceeding on the attacks. Aymo was shot and killed while walking by their own army this proves to Henry that both armies are just as dangerous and decides to go on his own way. Henry is also quite upset that his friend was killed. Henry almost gets killed when the Battle Police accuse Henry and many others of leaving the troops. One by one Henry watched people in the questioning line get shot and killed. Henry decides to run into the river while the police weren't looking. Henry is shot at while swimming and almost killed. As Henry lies in the train car he thinks about everyone he cares about; especially Catherine, his wound, the war itself, and his stars on the uniform that had fallen off. Henry has changed by being more concerned with how others are doing and doesn't focus so much on him anymore. Henry wishes the war would end already so he can go back to Catherine.

  11. When Henry returns to the villa it is very eerie and everyone there is discouraged and has a negative attitude. While he was away they had lost 3 cars and many soldiers got sick and wounded. Rinaldi became very depressed because of the long, weary war and became a heavy drinker. When he would drink he would get very aggressive and be very mean to people. The priest has also changed. He doesn’t let the soldier’s cruel words get to him and gains more self-esteem. Along with the Italian lines being broken, the Italians prepared to retreat because they heard that the German’s were now involved and wanted to have as little contact with them as possible. It is Henry’s duty to transport ambulances and medical supplies to a different location. The other drivers included Bonello, Piani, and Aymo. They pick up two girls on the way. When Piani and Aymo say that they are anarchists and socialists, they are conveying that they do not believe in a strong central government and that everyone should have ownership of what they own. Henry goes across the bridge first to make sure that it is not mined. This shows that Henry is courageous and willing to put his fellow soldiers before himself. When he sees the German staff car on the bridge above and the bicyclists, he gets really upset that the Italians are not doing anything to stop the German’s from advancing into Italian territory. During the retreat, Aymo gets shot while walking. Henry acts calmly and collects his papers to write to his family. Henry almost gets killed when the Battle Police are questioning and shooting people. He escapes by pushing through people, and jumping in the river. He then stays underwater for as long as possible and floats away before they can shoot him. While lying in the train, he wonders about whether he would be considered dead, but then realizes they wouldn’t have his papers. He thinks about his friends and his knee. He tries to avoid thinking about Catherine. He has changed his priorities since the beginning of the novel. He used to not truly love Catherine. Now he doesn’t want anything more than for the war to be over and to happily be with Catherine.

  12. When Henry returns the mood is gloomy and and sad. Rinaldi has become depressed and his drinking problem has gotten worse. The Priest has learned not to take the insults too personally. They must retreat because the Germans had broken through and crossed the line. Henry's role is to go to a new area and take the hospital equipment. Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and don't think that government should be the central power and believe that everyone should become socialists. Henry goes across the bridge first because the other guys are too scared and want Henry to go first. This shows how brave Henry can be. Henry is angry about seeing the German officers because it means that the Italians didn't do a very good job and let the Germans get through. Aymo is killed and Henry takes the matter calmly, he gets Aymo's papers so he can write to Aymo's family. He is caught by Italian Battle Troops being accused of abandoning his troops. With many other people he is ordered to be shot, but when Henry sees an opening he runs straight for the lake and escapes. As Henry lays in the train car he thinks about Catherine, and how he is hungry, and all of his friends in the war with him. He has become wiser than he was before the war stared and cares more for others. All he wants is for the war to end.

  13. Henry returns to a tired, defeated, and discouraged villa. There have been no victories since Henry left, soldiers have been getting sick, and three cars have been destroyed. Rinaldi's attitude is the same as the other people; tired and defeated. He tries to drown out the war by drinking more than Henry remembers. The priest has changed, gaining more self-confidence; not letting the people in the mess get to him. The Italians prepare to retreat because they are losing, and are afraid the Germans are going to overtake them. Henry is required to bring all of the equipment from the hospital back with him, but they decide to take side roads because he believes they will be faster than the main road. During the retreat; Henry and his team along with two girls evacuated from Gorizia. Aymo upsets the girls because they are scared and can’t speak any Italian. Their vehicle gets stuck in the mud, and they end up abandoning it in the road after Henry shoots one of the 2 sergeants with them as they try and leave the group. While walking up the hill, Piani and Aymo admit that they are anarchists and socialists. They reach a river with a small bridge that has been blown up as part of the retreat. Henry and the group continue up the river and find another bridge that has not been blown up. The others in the group are scared so Henry crosses first. Henry is angry to see the German staff car and bicyclists because he cannot believe that they got through the Italian defenses. When Aymo is killed, Henry collects his papers to write to his family and tell them what happened to him. Henry is almost killed when he is arrested for being an officer who abandoned his troop. He ends up sneaking out of the questioning line, jumping into the river, grabbing a piece of driftwood, and floating down the river to safety. When Henry finally makes it to the train he is thinking of Catherine and how much he really misses her. He also realizes he doesn't care about the war like he did at the beginning of the novel.

  14. The feeling at the villa is very dampened and dejected. Many soldiers had been wounded and some cars had been lost. Everything had gone bad. Rinaldi's energy had been drained. He was tired and defeated like the rest of the villa. Also, to drown out the war, he has taken up drinking. He drank more than Henry could remember. The priest has grown thick skin and has not allowed the soldiers to get the better of him now. He is more confident now. The Italians are pushed into retreating because the Germans had broken their line of defense. Henry is in charge of taking some cars and the hospital equipment back on the retreat to Bainsizza. At first the retreat is slow and backed up. There is much traffic and not much movement. Henry figures if they do not get moving the Germans are going to catch the retreat and slaughter them. Henry and his crew decide to take back roads to get away from the front line faster. Along the way Aymo picks up two virgin girls. The cars get stuck in the mud so they decide to push it up to a nearby farmhouse and stay there a while. Soon they leave and get their cars stuck in more mud. They go on without the cars. Piani and Aymo called themselves anarchists and socialists, which means they do not believe that a strong central government is the best kind of government. Henry crosses the bridge first to make sure it is not booby trapped with mines. This shows Henry is a strong, brave leader who is willing to do anything for his men. Henry is infuriated by the Italians because he believes they did not do all they could to hold the Germans back. While walking back, Aymo is shot by the Italians because they are paranoid because the German army has broke through. Henry collects Aymo's papers and is depressed that Aymo was killed because Aymo was not only a good friend, but also a great man. Henry is arrested by the battle Ppolice. They questioned officers who they thought had abandoned their troops. Henry sneaks out of the questioning line, then bolts for the river. He grabs onto a piece of driftwood after he is out of range of the battle police and floats down the river to safety. Henry thinks about his knee in the train car-it was a little stiff, but the surgeon had done an excellent job. He tries not to think about Catherine otherwise he might drive himself mad. Henry changed by this part of the novel because he is no longer selfish. He cares about Rinaldi, the priest, Catherine, and many others. He now despises the war and wishes for it to end.

  15. While retreating Henry almost gets killed because as he and Piani regroup with the rest of the retreat, he gets pulled aside by battle police. They accuse him and other officers of abandoning their troops and are ordered to be shot. All of the officers ahead of Henry in line were shot. So in order to avoid being shot, Henry ran towards the flooded river and jumped in.
The Italians prepare to retreat because the Austrians have broken through the front line . Henry’s role is to command a group of three medical vehicles and load the vehicle with medical supplies from the field hospital he was stationed at. The retreat itself is very slow, and many people desert their vehicles to move faster on foot through the harsh conditions that stopped the vehicles. The three ambulances that Henry is commanding take a different route and then get stuck and are forced to go forward on foot. There is an instance of friendly fire which results in one of the men dying.

  16. Henry goes across the bridge first to show his leadership/bravery, plus at this point he finds that his actions are most crucial due to his leading rank. Upon crossing, Henry spots a German staff car and two bicyclists; due to the fact that nobody is there to stop the enemy from advancing, Henry becomes angered. Shortly after, the group progresses up an embankment taking fire from a cowardly set of Italian soldiers, mistaking them for Germans. Aymo is hit in the base of his neck from a shot of friendly fire and dies soon after, Henry, aside from the rest of the group, remains calm. Further down the road, Henry and Piani escape to find a crowd of retreating troops who are being infiltrated to find hidden German officers who pose as Italian militia. As the Italian military police escort suspicious officials to the bank of the river to be “questioned”, Henry pulls away and jumps into the river. Once Henry finds refuge in a train cart full of guns and ammunition, he imagines Catherine lying there with him. He decides that now he is thought to be the enemy, there is no reason to be reunited with his regiment to continue fighting their war. So Henry begins his life as a “normal” citizen.

  17. The mood when Henry returns to the villa is tired and discouraged atmosphere. Many things have changed when he returned, there were losses and no victories, people had been killed, and some soldiers were reassigned to different areas. Rinaldi was once happy and more energetic, but now, even he is tired and feels defeated. The priest still continues to ignore the rants and comments that the soldiers have for him, he has become stronger at dismissing the negative remarks. The retreat is called because the Germans are powerful, and they are moving fast. Henry has to move equipment from his area to the city they are retreating to. Henry goes across the bridge first to see if it is rigged with explosives or not. It shows that Henry is brave, and not as selfish as he once was before. He is mad when he see's the Germans because it means the Italians didn't do their job and stop them. Ayomo is killed, and Henry's reaction is that he is shocked and upset, mostly because the shots came from the Italians. Henry is almost killed by the battle police, but he escapes by jumping into the river. Henry doesn't care who wins the war anymore, he just wants it to be over, and see Catherine.

  18. When Henery returns to the villa, most things overall have gone downhill. everyone is tried and mentaly defeated and the environment is decrupeted. There had been many losses across the front with no victories. the priest has risen above the teasings of the other soldiers. The italian retreat was slow. All of the cars were on a singe muddy road, If one car stoped the entire line would stop. Henry and his men seperated from the slow line to get to the next city faster. Ayomo was killed from italian gunfire. It was upseting for Henry. The battle police capture Henry and are about to kill him but he escapes into the river. Henry wants to get away and forget about the war.

  19. The mood when Henry returns is not well. A lot of things are different. People were killed, there no victories, and they suffered losses. Some soldiers were also sent off to different areas. Rinaldi is not the same person he once was. He has a different attitude and doesn't act as he did earlier. A feeling of defeat comes off him. The priest was able to ignore the negative remarks regarding him, showing he has grown character. The retreat was called because of the Germans and no one can keep up with them. Henry's responsibility is to move equipment from their current location to their new one in which they are retreating to. He crosses the bridge to check and make sure there are no explosives. This is very brave of Henry and shows maturity and that he isn't as selfish as he once was. When seeing the Germans he is not happy because he knows the Italians failed in stopping them. Aymo is then killed and Henry becomes upset. Henry saves himself from being killed by the battle police by jumping into the river. At this time all Henry wants is the war to be over.

  20. At the Villa the mood is depressing and eerie. Since Henry had last seen Rinaldi he has taken up more drinking, drinking more than he had ever seen him do. When Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and socialists they mean that they believe in a government where it is less formal and more individualized to certain areas. Henry goes across the bridge first to show leadership and also because if he didn’t no one would have the courage to. Henry going across the bridge first shows leadership and bravery. He is angry when he sees German Cars and bicyclists because he thinks that they broke through and are planning to take over. Aymo is shot by Italians on accident and killed, Henry is sad because he has lots a great friend. After he died they took him over off the rod so he wouldn’t be run over. As Henry is walking in a large group German officers pull him aside and question him. They were about to take him off to the side and kills him but he jumped in to the river and swam away. When Henry is lying down in the train car he thinks about his life and about his knee. At this time it is bothering him but he is thankful for what the surgeon did for him. Right now Henry is tired of war and wants everything to be okay and go back to normal, no more war.

While Henry was gone, Rinaldi became very depressed and started drinking more to drown out the war. The priest was able to ignore the other officers and is no longer affected by the teasing he use to get. The Italians prepare to retreat because they hear that the Germans have broken through the lines and are coming to attack. Henry's role in the retreat is to transport the supplies needed from the hospital to a new location. Henry along with the other drivers, Bonello, Piani, and Aymo, pick up two girls on the way. He tries not to think about Catherine because he know it will make him go crazy, but he also thinks about his friends. At that point, Henry realizes that he hates the war and hopes for it to end so he can be with Catherine again.

  22. Henry returns to the front to discover he’s not the only thing that’s changed. The last few months have been hard on the Italian Army and a lot of soldiers have been lost. The mess hall is no longer full and loud, but empty and quiet. Even Rinaldi’s fun and carefree personality was lost. He’s been working exhausting hours at the hospital and has become worried that he has Syphilis.
After Henry escapes from the Italians, he returns to his first opinion of the war. He decides that the war is over for him. He no longer plays a part in the war. Henry was never in the war for glory or because of his pride. He was always uncertain of his place in the war. Now he is finished with it, and trying to make it home to Catherine.

  23. When Henry returns to the villa it is very depressing. A lot of the people are sick, so all the cars are out. It is much worse now than it was before. Rinaldi has become more depressed and a little crazy. His comments are very rude and he has been drinking a lot more. The priest became stronger because he does not take the rude jokes to heart. The Italians prepared to retreat because the Germans broke through. Henry's job is to take the hospital equipment and cards to Bainsizza. The actual retreat involves Henry, Aymo, Piani, Bonello, and two ladies that Aymo wanted to bring with them. It is very slow and they drive in a large caravan. Henry goes across the bridge first to show leadership to his fellow pals.

  24. When Henry returns to the villa, his mood is tired and unsatisfied. When he was away, a lot of soldiers got sick and injured. Rinaldi has changed into a different person who is less calm and more depressed. He doesn’t think before he says things so they can come across mean. The priest did the opposite, he is able to not take things so personal and have his opinion. Henry goes over the bridge first because he doesn’t want his friends to get hurt in case the bridge was mined. It shows that he is willing to die for his friends. He is angry when he sees the Germans staff car because the Italians didn’t cut off them like they should have. Aymo ends up dying and Henry is mad because the shot was from an Italian. Henry was almost killed when the battle police pull Henry aside because they thought he abandoned his troops. As he lies in the train car he just thinks about Catherine and how he wants to be with her.

  25. When Hery returns to the villa the mood is very depressing and somber. Since Henry has been away the town has gone downhill, the war is wearing everyone down. While Henry was away the only things he has missed are defeat and death. All the ambulances and materials are being used to help get the injured off the front lines and into medical personnel's care. The war is certainly taking its toll, especially on Rinaldi. Since Henry left Rinaldi has been doing more and more operations on soldiers injured in the war. This has caused Rinaldi a great deal of stress so he has turned to drinkig. He has also become meaner, more so when he is drunk. He is significantly meaner to the priest. The priest on the other hand has become stronger, learning how to take the tourment and ignore it instead of taking it to heart. The Italian's prepare to retreat because the germans broke through the line and will eventually cut them off. Henry is ordered to take the medical equipment and move it the new location. Henry and his two other companions, Piani and Aymo, move the ambulances through very muddy roads. While they drive they find two girl that seem to be stuck and need help so the men pick them up and the girls become part of the retreat as well. Henry goes across the bridge first to make sure it is safe to go across. This shows that Henry cares aout his men and wants to keep them safe. When Henry sees the German cars and bicyclists he is angered by this because he feels the Italians did not do enough to keep the Germans back. Aymo is killed and Henry is very upset because he actually liked Aymo and is mad that he could not protect him. Henry almost gets killed when he is corralled on a bridge for being an officer. He can tell this is not good because when another officer is questioned he ends up getting shot. He has not seen an officer who has been questioned not been shot. Henry is not prepared to get shot so he takes drastic meausures to ensure his life. Henry then jumps off the bridge to escape his death and floats down the river with a log to stay afloat. When Henry gets out of the river and onto the train car he lays down and thinks about Catherine. Henry has changed by not being so selfish anymore, he put his life on the line for his men and did everything he could to protect them. At this point in time Henry feels the war is pointless and just wants to be with Catherine.

  26. When Henry returns to the villa the feeling is discouraging and dreary due to the fact that the Italian's are losing the war. Since he has gone away there were rarely any victories and many losses, people had been lost, and many people were at different posts than they were when he left. Rinaldi has changed because he is more dreary than before. He now thinks he has a more severe drinking issue and he also thinks he has syphilis. The priest has changed because his sense of humor is now different. He's learned to take jokes and such. He shrugs things off and doesn't take everything to heart. The Italians prepare to retreat due to the fact that they are losing the war. Henry's duty is to take the medical supplies and move them to the new location and when transporting the ambulances they go through heavily muddy roads. The real retreat includes Henry, Aymo, Bonello, Piani, and two women that they have rescued and also wanted to join them. They drive out of town in a caravan moving quite slowly. Aymo and Piani discuss that everyone should be a socialist and have ownership of their possessions. Henry sacrifices himself when he goes over the bridge because it might be mined. He risks his life to help his friends. Henry is displeases about seeing the Germans because it meant that the Italians didn't succeed in their job and let the Germans get in. Aymo is the one who gets killed. Henry's reaction to him friend dying is quite calm but he is still depressed about the loss of his friend. Henry almost gets killed because the battle police capture him but he escaped into the river. His feeling about war is he wishes he could just forget all about it.

  27. The air in the villa is discouraged is beaten down. There are very many wounded and there are also several cars missing in action. On top of this change, Henry sees that both the priest and Rinaldi have changed. The priest lets everyone walk all over him, he also has developed his feelings about the war to a stronger level. Rinaldi is basically an angry drunkard. Next the Italians order a retreat; Henry's job in this is to move medical supplies. The retreat is slow going at first. Piani and Aymo claim they are socialists and anarcharists because they that everything would be better if there were no formal government and the cities made their rules. Henry goes on the bridge first to trigger any possible mines/ bombs placed there. This shows he is brave and foolish, and a very good friend. Henry is angry when he sees the German car and cyclists because they blew up the small bridge but left the large one standing. Amos is the first to die. This leaves Henry shocked- it could have anyone- the Dermana hadn't even fired, it'd been the Italians. Henry is almost killed by the Battle Police because they believe he is a deserter. He escaped by floating down the river with a log. Henry just wishes the war was over so he could return to a normal life.

  28. Once Henry returns to the Villa, the mood is opressive and dismal. The air is thick with tension and Henry knows that things must not have faired well. He learns that while he was gone, that the summer had been bad and the soldiers wern't doing well either. The major also states that he was quite fortunate to have gotten hurt at the time he had, as the next summer isn't expected to be any better than it is now. Rinaldi has taken all the defeat hard and has started to drink heavily because of it, ruining his image slightly by his choice. The priest takes an opposite look onto the war and makes it more positive. He begins to think that the war will end soon and can now tolerate the teasing he gets from the soldiers without a complaint.

  29. Henry returns to a dead-like villa. Since he has been gone soldiers have become very sick, there have been many losses, and no victories. Rinaldi is now very depressed and lonesome since he doesn’t operate anymore. He has been drinking more and more also. Officers continue to tease and give the priest a hard time about his religion. This doesn’t bother him anymore though; he has become a stronger man. The Italians prepare to retreat after hearing that the Germans have broken through lines and are ready to attack. Henry’s role in this retreat is to move all the hospital equipment including the ambulances to another town. The retreat included Henry, Aymo, Bonelo, and two women they had rescued. The five of them then drove out of town in a caravan. When Piani and Aymo discuss being anarchists and socialists they believe that everyone should be a socialist. Henry shows his courage by crossing the bridge first. (Not knowing if it was trapped or not!) When Henry sees German staff cars and bicyclists he immediately is angry because in his opinion he thinks that the Italians didn’t do the best that they could have to hold the Germans back. Aymo was shot while walking back. Henry is saddened by this because he was a good friend to him. Still on the way back, Henry is arrested by battle police. He escapes getting questioned by floating down a river on a piece of wood. While in the train car Henry ponders about his knee. It is quite stiff now but not enough to slow him down. Henry doesn’t want to think about Catherine too much because he will miss her too much. The only change I notice about Henry is continuing to become less and less selfish. Henry still despises the war and wants it to end.

  30. When Henry returns to the villa just about everything has changed. Many people have died so the overall feel of it is sad. Some soldiers have been moved around and put into new areas. Rinaldi is very discouraged. You can feel the negative presence of him around others. Henry leads the group across the bridge since nobody else would do it. Everyone was scared that they would be blown up but Henry showed crazy amounts of courage by crossing it. Henry spots Germans and is instantly upset. He knew that the Italians had failed badly. Aymo gets shot and Henry jumps into the river to save himself from being injured again or even killed. Henry really wants the war to end so that he can forget everything.

  31. When Henry returns to the villa, he finds that the atmosphere of the villa has changed from relaxed to being drained and discouraged. While Henry was away the fighting went poorly and many were sick or injured. Rinaldi is also tired but buried himself in his work to escape his exasperation and confusion. Like the others the priest is also weary of the war. The taunting of the others no longer bothers him and he has lost his belief in victory. During the retreat Henry agrees to go across the bridge first to check for signs of traps or explosives. This shows that, despite the risk, he is willing to take the necessary action to get everyone safely away from the front. Henry gets mad when he sees the German staff car because it shows how miserably they have failed at guarding the front. Later when Aymo is shot, Henry is sad and thinks of writing to Aymo’s family later. He also realizes that it was the scared Italians that shot and that they had more than one enemy now. Later while Henry was crossing a bridge with Piani, the battle police pull him out of the crowd and accuse him of being a German in an Italian uniform. When Henry realizes that they were going to kill him, he jumps in the river and floats away. While Henry is escaping in the train he thinks about Catherine and their love, and how he does not want to use his head to think with but wants to use it to remember with. Thinking about the war in the train, Henry states that there is no honor in war and he does not care about appearances.

  32. When Henry returns to the villa, the feeling is very different. Everything is so depressed. People have been dying and they all have developed clinical depression, I am sure of it! Rinaldi changed, a lot, he became very alcohol heavy and has become weaker as a character. The priest has stayed pretty strong through out the war and he seems to have grown and developed as a person. Henry went across the bridge first because he wants to make sure there were no weapons or traps that could kill him and his friends. It shows how brave he is and how he has grown as well as a character.

  33. As Henry returns to the villa, he is not coming back to the same place he left. People's moral has fallen and everyone seems to be a little down. Rinaldi has taken to the bottle and is drunk almost every night. Though he is happy to see Henry and have him back, it just isn't the same as before. The priest is optimistic about the war and hope that is will soon be put to an end. When Henry decides that he will cross the bridge first it shows that he is the leader of group. It also proves that he is willing to sacrifice his own life for the men who put their faith in him.

  34. When Henry returns to the villa after his recovery, the mood is depressed and negative. Henry learns that three ambulance cars were lost and that the fight had been brutal. His major tells Henry that he was lucky to have been hit when he was and taken away from the savagery. Rinaldi, Henry's friend, becomes depressed from the intense operations and dragging on of the war. The priest has become accustomed to the joking of his religion and does not allow the jokes to bother him as they used to.

The Italians prepare to retreat when word of the ample amount of Austrian artillery is found in the forest near their camp. The major orders the ambulance drivers to move the cars and take as many people from the hospitals as possible; the rest will be left for dead. The Italian army begins their retreat in the pouring rain and complete darkness. Henry describes the retreat as a column of guns and troops moving through a quiet, dark town.

The term anarchist means to belief in the abolition of a higher power. When Aymo and Piani talk about not going to church and being anarchists, they mean not wanting God as the higher power over them. The term socialist means the belief of state over government. During this discussion, Aymo and Piani mean that they want to be the leader of themselves.

Henry crosses the bridge first as a leader. He refuses to put the rest of his crew in danger before himself and takes the deed upon himself. This shows Henry's selflessness and bravery gained through the battles and experiences of war. Henry becomes angry when he sees the German staff car and bicyclists because he wonders if he and his group had been cut off. However, when Aymo is shot to death, Henry realizes that the shooters could not have been Germans but Italians. Henry reacts to the shooting as his fault for crossing the fields rather than on the railway. Just as Henry reconnects with the Italian army, he is pulled aside and accused of being a German spy in an Italian uniform. The Battle Police decide to shoot him as they had to all the other officers who neglected their responsibilities. Henry, however, escapes by jumping into the river and allowing the river to carry him away from the shore.

When Henry makes it safely to the train, he lies and thinks about his experience and adventures. He realizes that his time with war is over and that he no longer is part of the Italian army. He views war as something not honorable and that after his horrid experiences he should not be expected to come back to this point of employment. Henry changes in a sense that he no longer sees himself as a pawn in this war and no longer wishes to be apart of it.

The Italians prepare to retreat because the Germans have crossed the line, ready to attack. Henry’s role is to take the hospital supplies and the wounded to different locations. The actual retreat consists of Henry, Piani, Aymo, and Bonello, and two girls. When Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and socialists, they mean they do not believe in having a controlled government. Henry crosses the bridge first to see whether the bridge is mined or not. Henry shows that he is courageous and feels responsible for the others. Henry is upset to see the Germans because that means the Italians did not do their job to hold them back. Henry’s friend, Amyo, is shot and killed which upsets Henry and he feels responsible. Henry is almost killed by the Italian battle police but he escapes by jumping in a river. As Henry lies in the train car, he thinks of Rinaldi and the priest and how he will most likely never see them again. He tries to avoid thinking about Catherine, but he is anxious to be with her. Henry’s thoughts about the war are neutral, he just wishes the war would end.

  36. When Henry returns to the villa it is very gloomy and feels defeated. While he was gone there were no victories, ambulances were lost and soldiers became sick. Rinaldi has become very depressed. He has no surgeries to do and is very discouraged. The priest is now unaffected by everyone's comments to him. The Italians prepare to retreat because there is word that the Germans were close. Henry's role is to get all of the supplies from the hospital and the ambulances to a safe town. During the retreat they pick up two girls. They get the ambulances stuck taking a side road because of all the traffic. Piani and Aymo say they are anarchists and socialists because they don't want the government to have total power and they think people should have ownership of their own things. 37. When Henry returns to the villa the mood is very depressed and defeated. It's like that because many are wounded and they lost numerous cars. Rinaldi is discouraged and drunk all the time and brings a negative feeling to the room. The priest has changed because he no longer lets the taunting and teasing affect him from the other soldiers. The Italians retreat because the Germans are too close for comfort. Henrys job was to transport supplies and ambulances to a safer town. During the retreat they come across two young and frightened girls. The girls won't talk but Henry decides that it's unsafe for them. While the others cross the bridge, Aymo gets shot and killed by Italians. This makes sense to Henry because the Italians are so shaken up that they'd shoot anybody. Henry almost gets killed when he was pulled aside from walking in a crowd. The Battle Police believe that all the men they have, had left their troops. 38. When Henry returns to the villa, the mood seems to be depressing, and dead. When he was gone a lot of the soldiers got sick and injured. Rinaldi seems to be very depressed and maybe even going a little bit crazy. He started to drink a lot so he wouldn’t be thinking about the war all the time. But the priest on the other hand started to not take things that people said to him so seriously. He kind of let them fly by and not bother him. When going to the bridge, nobody wanted to go first. So Henry stepped up and decided that he would, because he wasn’t afraid. He sees the Germans and is filled with anger, he knew that the Italians hadn’t done their job and that they had failed in their mission. 40. What will happen next?! Henry is on the loose after a risky escape from harmful German soldiers. Henry has had enough of the war and he was ready to begin anew. This opinion is proven when Henry is lying in the train and he thinks to himself, "I was through. I wished them all the luck...but it was not my show anymore..." While Henry is on his way to Mestre to find Catherine he tries not to think about war or his memories of his love because both of the ideas make him upset. It will be a risky trip for Henry but his determination to reach his destination will get him where he needs to be.

  41. The mood of the villa is sad, gloomy, and defeated. When he was away, the summer was terrible. People were wounded and many were killed when three cars were lost. The priest doesn’t care what people say or think about him anymore, and thinks the war will hopefully end soon. While Rinaldi, on the other hand, has become depressed and looked into the “anti-depressant drug”… alcohol and has become an alcoholic. The Italians prepare to retreat because Germans are now coming also along with the other attackers. Henrys role now is to move hospital supplies to a new location. The retreat actually is that they have learned the Italian line has been broken, including two girls, Piani, Aymo, Bonello, and Henry. Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and socialists(they don’t believe in strong central governments). When Henry crosses the bridge first to see if there is any mines that are layering it, this shows extreme character. It shows that he is brave, willing to do whatever it takes to help is retreat, and that he’s a strong leader. Henry is fuming when he sees the German staff car and bicyclists because he knows the Italians weren’t doing what they were told to do so now they are invaded. When Henry finds out that Ayomo got killed, he was shocked and very sad. Battle Police captured him and almost executed him, before Henry escapes and jumps into a river and floats until he reaches a bank. When he is on the train all he can think about is Catherine, and realizes… he doesn’t want anything to do with the war any longer.

  42. When Henry returns he finds people exhausted and in despair. Soldier's are on the verge of giving up. They all feel defeated and are on the breaking point.
The priest has realized the full effect of the war and he no longer cares what people think of him. Rinaldi struggles to find happiness in anything other than his work and has taken to much drinking.
The Italians prepare to retreat because the Germans have grown far too close to them. Henry is put in charge of moving the ambulance and all medical supplies to a safer location in town.
Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and socialists because they do not believe in allowing government to hold so much power.
Henry goes first to search for any land mines that may be hidden across the bridge. This shows that he is very brave and has grown to be less selfish. By going across the bridge he's saved everyone, other than himself, from any potential danger.
Lt. Henry is enraged by the sight of the German staff car and bicyclists because this means that the Italians failed to carry out their mission.
Ayomo dies from a gun shot which upsets Henry; however, he is not shocked because he believes that the Italians are so frightened that they would shoot anyone.
While people are in pursuit of Henry he leaps off of the ridge into the river then proceeds to stay under water to save himself from getting shot.

  43. The mood at the villa when Henry returns is lonely, empty, dreary, and depressing. While Henry was away, the war took a turn for the worse. The Austrians had beaten them, and everyone became gentler because they were accepting defeat. Rinaldi has become very tired and depressed, and the only things that made him happy anymore was working and sleeping with girls. The priest has become used to everyone picking on him, and it doesn't bother him anymore. He has very high hopes that the war will be over soon. Henry doesn't feel the same. The Italians prepare to retreat because the Germans and Austrians have broken through one of their fronts. Henry's role is to load up hospital equipment in the ambulance and drive to their new post. They left Bainsazza and went back to the villa, slept for three hours, got some food, and loaded up some of Henry's things.

  44. In Book three Henry is brought back to reality. He had been living in a virtual bubble with Catherine at the hospital in which the harsh realities of war were ostracized from his mind. When Henry is sent away to war and then returns to the Villa there is abrupt change in the mood of the story from blissful and easygoing to dark and dreary. Since Henry has been away the war had taken a change for the worst. Many had been wounded or killed and they had lost a large number of supplies. This pressure had caused many of the officers to experience an attitude change. Rinaldi has turned to alcohol due to his depression and has become much more argumentative. The priest on the other hand, has grown stronger and is no longer affected by the teasing and mocking from the other soldiers. When Henry’s legion of the army hear of the German’s breakthrough they prepare to retreat. In this retreat Henry is responsible for moving ambulances and medical gear. Although Henry is never on the frontlines fighting his bravery is revealed when he crosses the bridge first. It is very possible that there could have been mines or other booby traps on the bridge. Henry gets angry when he sees the German car because it means the Italians were unsuccessful in their endeveaur to cut off the Germans.
Death is very prominent at this point in the novel. Aymo gets shot and ends up being killed. Henry is especially upset by this because the shot came from an Italian. Henry, imself even comes close to being stolen by the grim reaper during this scene. The Battle Police believed Henry to have abondaned his troops so they seized him and put him in the back of the car to be shot later. Luckily, Henry is able to run away and make it to the river, where he floats away untracked.
After reading the third book, the reader is able to see how much Henry has grown up. Henry no longer care for the afflictions of war, in fact he does not care who wins the war at all. Henry just wants to be happy with the love of his life, Catherine.

  48. The villa to which Henry returns is set in a dark and gloomy mood. While Henry was gone, many casualties had occured and three ambulances had been lost. Henry's old friend Rinaldi is drunk and depressed; he also believes that he has contracted syphilis, and picks on the priest as much as he used to. The priest has grown much stronger because of the war, and no longer pays any mind to the teasing of the other men. The Italians are planning to retreat because they have heard that the Germans are quickly advancing towards them. Henry's job in the retreat is to transport the medical equipment with the aid of his ambulance. The people retreating with Henry are Bonello, Piani, Aymo, and two young girls that the men rescued in Gorizia. The trip is rainy and rough, and the two girls are frightened and cannot speak Italian. The ambulance gets stuck in mud twice, with the men not being able to get it out the second time, forcing them to go on foot. Piani and Aymo are referred to as anarchists, but really, they are socialists. They are not able to clearly explain why they are socialists, they only say that they come from Imola, where all of the people are and have always been socialists.
When Henry and his comrades encounter a bridge, Henry crosses first to check for explosive traps; this shows Henry's bravery, as he was willing to sacrifice himself to save his fellow drivers. Henry soon sees a German car and bicycle troops, and is enraged because the Italians did not even try to stop these German troops from advancing. Aymo is shot and killed, and when Henry finds out that the shots came from fearful Italians, he becomes even more upset. Henry is captured by a group of Italians who call themselves "the battle police". These men are capturing and executing officers that they believe have abandoned their troops. The battle police almost kill Henry, but he jumps into a river before they can shoot him. When Henry is on the train car, all he is able to think about is Catherine. Henry wants nothing to do with the war, he just wants to be with the woman he loves.

  49. The villa, when Henry returns, is a downtrodden wreck. The priest thickened his skin up and is now oblivious to the torment he used to receive. Rinaldi picked up heavy drinking to try and fade away the stress of the war. Aymo and Piani call themselves anarchists and socialists because they want people to own what they have. Henry went across the bridge first to check for booby traps. This displays that he has become even less selfish than before, more responsible, and in perhaps even a little careless (assuming that he didn't care whether he died or not). When Henry saw the German car and bike, he was flustered because it means the Italians hadn't put much effort towards defending their own land. Aymo is shot and killed, and this saddens Henry. He is soon accused of fleeing the war, so he almost put to death. He dashed off the bridge he was on and escaped down the river. In the train car, Henry reflects and wishes only to see Catherine and return to normal life.

  50. When Henry returns to the villa the mood is hopeless and gloomy. Upon his return, Henry learns that since he's been gone ambulances have been lost and soldiers have become very sick. With the war taking a major toll on him, Rinaldi has fallen into a deep depression and has resorted to drinking. Although the jokes and teasing toward the priest have not stopped, he doesn't allow it to bother him anymore and seems defeated as well. The Italians prepare to retreat because it is thought that the Germans are planning an attack. Henry's role in the retreat is to transport all of the hospital supplies along with the wounded to a safe and secure location. Piani, Aymo, Bonello and two girls that were picked up on the way, join Henry during the retreat. When Piani and Aymo refer to themselves as anarchists and socialists they mean they don't believe in a contolling government that has total power over the people. Henry ventures across the bridge first to make sure is wasn't mined. This shows how courageous and brave Henry is and how he is willing to give up his life for others. When the German staff car and bicyclists are spotted henry is extremely angry with the other italian soldiers who didn;t do their job to keep them back. Aymo is shot and killed leaving Henry feeling responsible and helpless. Nearly getting killed himself for abandoning his troops, Henry avoids getting shot by the Italian Battle Police by jumping in the river. While laying in the train car Henry thinks about all the people he will probably never see again and although he tries not to, his mind constantly wanders to Catherine and their life together after the war. At this point all Henry wants is for the war to be over.

  51. When Henry returned to the villa, the atmosphere was completely opposite when he left it; dreay and discouraged. The war took an unexpected turn for the Austrians, and they were driving back Italians from the front. Also, many people have died or were seriously injured. Rinaldi became tired and very unhappy, unless he was working. He started to become an excellent surgeon and wanted to be even greater as his work overcomes his life. When he's not working, he is drinking. The priest also was very tired and hated the war. Although, he began to tolerate the constant teasing from the other soliders. The Italians begin to retreat because a shortage in men and food was becoming more apparent. Also, they knew the Austrians were going to attack and win because the Germans allied the Austrians. Their only choice was to retreat, or be held prisoners. Henry's role in the retreat was to take the hospital's equipment to a safer region. During the retreat, Henry tries to take back roads to get to their destination quicker, but instead the cars were left behind in the mud roads. Piani and Aymo call themselves anarchists and socialists because they don't believe in a government having all the power. They believe it should be distributed throughout a city, for example. Henry crossed the river first to check the railway for any explosives. I think this shows that Henry is brave and willing to risk his life to save others. While they were crossing the bridge, Henry spotted a German car. He became very angry when he realized the Italians haven't done anything to stop the Germans from crossing the bridge. Aymo gets shot by frightened Italians mistaking them for the enemy trying to invade. Henry's initial reaction was to put Aymo's head uphill and to try to stop the bleeding. Walking along with the retreat, Henry and Piani are almost safe; but battle police take Henry away because they noticed his dressings. They believed he was an Austrian trying to get in as a solider. The Battle Police were killing every man, and Henry knew and understood why. So he escaped by dashing into the icy river. He floated away until he came to a shore. That's where he rushed out and onto a moving train. He finds himself lying in an artillery crate, wishing he was with Catherine. He also thought about how hungry he was. Henry just wanted the war to be over at this point so he could be with Catherine.

  52. Henry returns to the villa to find a very dreary atmosphere. He finds that Rinaldi no longer operates and is drinking a substantial amount more than he used to and the priest has built up a high tolerance to the taunting of the other men at the villa. The Italians prepare to retreat because they receive word that the Germans have broken through their lines. Henry must transport all the ambulances and equipment to another city. He becomes angered when he see a German staff car and bicyclists because it meant that they had not been stopped by the Italians. Henry fears that the bridge might be mined so he volunteers to cross it first. This action of his shows that he cares about his comrades and the importance of his mission. Henry is almost killed by the battle police because they thought he abandoned his unit.

  53. Henry did not expect his homecoming to be like it was, depressing and dreary. Rinaldi drinks a lot more than he used to, and the Priest no longer gets offended by the taunting from the other guys. The Italians prepare to retreat because they have heard the Germans have joined up with the Austrians, and there was a shortage of food. Henry goes across the bridge first to check for explosives; this action showed his bravery. He was angry when he saw the German staff car and bicyclists because the Italians were doing nothing to stop them. Aymo gets shot by frightened Italians thinking they were the enemy. This angers Henry. Henry was then taken away by battle police, and was going to be questioned as to why he is not with his troops, then would be shot and killed. Henry sees an opportunity to escape when no one is looking, and jumps in to an icy river. he is shot at multiple times, but they missed. He grabbed on to a floating log and held on till he drifted ashore. he then jumped on to a moving train, and laid down in an artillery crate. He thought about his hunger, and Catherine. He wants the war to be over, so he can just be with the one he loves.

  54. The mood now is gloomy and bleak. The major says that it was a bad summer. Many people are sick and they lost some cars. Rinaldi is much more depressed by the war. The priest is no longer touched by the joking about him. The Italians are forced to retreat because the Germans and Austrians broke though in the north. Henry is to take hospital equipment and drive the cars. The retreat is slow-moving, orderly, and sullen. Henry goes across the bridge first to test it for mines. Although Henry is not interested in medals or other honors, he is willing to take action to get the job done. Henry is angry when the German staff car and bicyclists pass because it appears that no one attempted to stop them. Aymo is killed. Henry reacts with reason and tries to figure out the situation. Henry realizes that they are in more danger of being shot by the Italians than the Germans. Henry is stopped by the battle police and realizes that they are shooting officers because they caused the Italian defeat. Henry runs for the river and stays underwater until he is far away from the gunfire. Henry thinks about his knee, Rinaldi, the priest, and Catherine. Henry is done with the war.

  55. When Henry returns to the villa, he finds it very somber and discouraging. Since he was away, many people got sick, there have been several attacks, and three cars were lost. Rinaldi has become depressed and disgusted with the war, and the priest is experiencing a similiar feeling of defeat in life. When word comes by that Germans and Austrians are headed towards them, the Italians retreat. Henry is ordered to clear out the wounded and bring hospital equipment. It is a long, tough trip. When they reach the bridge, Henry goes across first because he believes if it's meant to blow up than one lone man can't set it off. This shows a bit of bravery but also a streak of selfishness. As he watches German bicyclists cycle by, he grows angry over their foolishness and lack of logic. They had previously blew up a minor bridge but then left the main bridge free to everyone. Aymo is killed as the group is attempting to cross an embankment and Henry acts calmly, trying to figure out how to make it out alive. He exercises this same level-headedness when he makes a stealthy escape into the icy river after being accused of abandoning his troops. As Henry lies in the train car, his mind never leaves Catherine. He ponders the agonies of war and how none of it will matter once he's back with his love.

  56. When Henry returns to the villa he is confronted with a wide-spread depression. While Henry was gone many soldiers had benn injured, sickened,or killed. Rinaldi has become so depressed from the war he resorts to drinking heavily. The area is then given an order of retreat after being told that the Germans may attack soon. Henry's job in this is to move equipment from the base to the city they were retreating to.When they reach the bridge,Henry is the first to go across which shows some braveryfor Henry as the others believed the bridged was mined. When Henry sees the German cyclist he is angered because the army didnt do their job by holding them off.Piani and Aymo are fellow drivers with Henry and pride themselves in being anarchist because they believe in seperate government for cities instead of one central one. Aymo is shot and killed and Henry is angered once again because he believes it was an Italian that shot him. After all of this Henry is accused abadoning his squad which was punichable by death. Henry escaped into the river where he hitches a ride on a train cart. In the train cart Henry thinks about Catherine and selfishly care less about the outcome of the war as long as he is with Catherine.
