*Calling all literary sleuths, where else have you heard the term "a separate peace"? What does Lt. Henry mean when he says this?
Some other topics to consider:
*What does the bar operator offer to do? How does he help Henry?
*Who is Simmons and how does he help?
*How does Henry feel about life at this point?
*Is Henry still in danger? What must he do?
*Who is Count Greffi? Why did Hemingway include this scene?
*What kind of person is Emilio? How do you know?
*What happens when Catherine and Lt. Henry reach Switzerland?
I have heard the term "a spearate peace" from "Their Eyes Were Watcing God". Lt. Henry says this and he means that there a peace from being away from all the madness that the war has created. THe bar operater offers to house Henry and give him leave papers. Leave papers are papers that you get from the army that says that you are on leave and not deserting the army. He helps Henry by giving him the advice that he should not walk out with his old coat because it shows where the army stars have been cut off. ALso he tells Herny not to let others house him unless he knows them because people will turn him over to the police. Simmons is one of Henry friends who is studying singing in the town that Henry is currently in. Henry is helped by Simmons by giving Henry clothes and telling him how to get out of Italy and into Switzerland, where he will be saffe. Henry is feeling like an imposter at this point in his life. He misses being held by his clothes or how peple treat you and respect you by the clothes you wear. Henry's life is still slightly in danger because if he is arrested by the police he would be killed and Cahterine would be left a pregant widow. Count Greffi is an old man who was of no importance earlier in the story but has now come back into it. Hemmingway added this part to make the story lightetr and not as depressing. Emilio is the kiind of person who is a good person to have around because they will always have your bacj. I know this because in the novel it is Emilio who comes and warns Henry that the police are coming to arrest him in the morning. When Catherine and Herny reach Switzerland they are first questioned why they are there. After some bribing though they are on their way to Montreux to get a hotel and stay there.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers to hide Henry and get him papers. Simmons gives Henry some clothes and how to reach Switzerland. At this point, Henry is worried about what will happen to him and Catherine. Count Greffi is an old man who was mentioned before, and his scene is meant to cheer the reader up. Emilio is a good friend because he warns Henry that he will be arrested and helps him escape to Switzerland. After he and Catherine reach Switzerland, they are arrested but are able to bribe their way to Montreux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar owner offers Henry a place to stay, leave papers and clothes. Simmons is one of Henry's friends and gives him advice about leaving Italy and loans him clothes. Henry has a concerned pesonality at this point and is worried about what will happen to him and Catherine in the future. Count Greffi is an old man who Henry plays pool with. Emilio is a good, loyal friend. He warns Henry and Catherine that the police are after him. He also helps the escape, gives them his boat, and gives them directions. When they get to Switzerland, they are interrogated by police, and have their passports taken. They do end up getting visas and go to Montreaux and get a hotel.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry a place to stay and states that he can get a hold of leave papers for him. Henry refuses his offers. Later, Henry takes a cab to visit his friend Simmons, who studies music. While there, Henry asks him the easiest and safest way to reach Switzerland. Simmons answers by telling him that he can take his rowboat from Stresa. Along with this, Simmons provides Henry with clean civilian clothes. At that point, Henry is nervous about the events coming up; but, he is excited to see Catherine again and to start a new life with her. When he finds Catherine, they have their stay at a hotel in that town. Henry is still in danger; he feels like a criminal in the back of his mind. He realizes that they must get away before he gets arrested. Count Greffi is an older man with much wisdom and experience on his side. Hemingway is sure to include this scene because Count Greffi presents words full of wisdom to Henry. He states not to take love for granted: "Do not forget that is a religious feeling." (Pg 263) Emilio seems to be a faithful friend to Henry because he warns him of getting arrested in the morning. He wants what's best for Henry; therefore, he gave Henry the chance to make a break for it. When Catherine and Lt. Henry reach Switzerland, they are arrested. They end up talking there way into getting visas, and they stay in the town of Montreaux for a while.
ReplyDeleteAfter Henry gets off the train, he stops for breakfast. The bar operator offers to let Henry stay there secretly and give him fake leave papers so he doesn't have to return to army. He is also helpful because he advises Henry to get civilian clothes because it was obvious he had cut the stars off of the one he was wearing. Simmons is an opera singer that Henry visits. They are old friends and Henry asks him to buy him some civilian clothes so doesn't look suspicious. Simmons gives Henry some of his clothes and tells him to go to Switzerland. Henry misses being respected for his clothes like he used to. Now people look at him strangely knowing that most men his age have joined the army. He is still in danger because as long as he is in Italy, he could be arrested at any time. He must safely cross the border into Switzerland to be safe. Count Greffi is a ninety-four-year-old man whom Henry has known for a while. His purpose is to show the reader someone Henry looks up and considers wise. Emilio is a very loyal person, as you learn when he warns Henry and Catherine that they will be arrested the next day. He is also a good friend because he allows Henry to take the boat to Switzerland before paying for it. When the couple reaches Switzerland, they are stopped by the police. They lie and say they are there for winter sport and are allowed to continue on their way to Montreaux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry fake leave papers so he doesn't have to return to the army, Henry refuses his offer. Later on, Henry visits his friend Simmons, who is a opera singer. During his visit, Henry asks for the easiest route to Switzerland and Simmons answers by saying that he should take a rowboat there. He finds Catherine and they stay at a hotel for the night. Henry is really nervous at this point and feels that he is still in danger of getting arrested. Count Greffi is a much older man who knows Henry, he is included in this scene to show how Henry looks up to Geffi because of his wisdom. Emilio is a loyal friend because he warns Henry and Catherine that they will get arrested the next day and he gives Henry a boat to take to Switzerland. Once they reach Switzerland, they are caught by the police but easily lie by saying they there for the winter sports and the police let them go. From there, they continue to Montreaux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator helps out Henry by letting him stay in the building and offers leave papers if he wanted some. Simmons is a man Henry knows who was studying singing. He helps out by giving Henry clothes to blend in more and helped him decide where to go. Henry feels sad about life right now. Henry is still in danger and he has to stay in disguise. Count Greffi is an older gentleman that Henry knows. Henry had met him when he was in Stresa. This scene is included so the mood would lighten up a bit and Henry would get advice. Emilio is a good friend who warns Henry about the police who are going to arrest him in the morning. He gives Henry a boat to take to Switzerland so he and Catherine can escape. When they reach Switzerland, the police question them, but Henry and Catherine lie, which the police believed their story, and let them go.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers to give Henry fake leave papers so that he doesn't have to return to the Army. After Henry refuses, the bar operator actually helps him by advising Henry to get some civilian clothing to walk around in. Simmons is an acquaintance of Henry's who is a singer who helps Henry by actually getting him the civilian clothes and tells him to make a leave for Switzerland. Henry is pretty depressed with his life at the moment and also misses walking around town like it's no big deal. Count Greffi was previously mentioned earlier in the story comes back to talk to Henry. This scene was included to break up the sad or depressing parts in the novel and give the reader some hope. Henry is in trouble because the police are looking for him. Henry and Catherine must escape and row all the way to Switzerland to become safe again. IF the police find Henry he will more than likely be shot and killed. Once in Switzerland, the police question them, confiscate their row boat, and Henry must make up a story as to why they are there. The Police believe the story that Henry is there for winter sport and they let them go on their way.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry leave papers that are fake so Henry won't have to go back to the Army. Henry refuses and goes to see his friend Simmons. Simmons is studding singing. Simmons gets Henry some civilian clothes and tells him that the best place to get away from the war is Switzerland. Henry still feels like he is in danger and feels he needs to be in disguise. Count Greffi is an older man that knows Henry. This shows how Count Greffi inspires Henry and helps the mood lighten up a bit. Emilio is a good and loyal friend to Henry, and tells him that he is going to be arrested the next day. When Henry and Catherine are arrested they lie to the police saying they are there for the winter sports. The police believe them and let them go.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry a place to stay and get leave papers for him. Henry refuses his offer. Henry takes a cab to visit his friend Simmons, who studies music, and while Henry is there he offers Henry some normal cloths. Henry is worried about finding Catherine again and he starting a new life with her. Count Greffi is an old friend who is staying at the same hotel as Henry, and he is looking for someone to play pool with. Emilio is a faithful friend. He warns Henry and that the police are after him. He helps Henry and Catherine escape by letting them use his boat, and gives them directions to get into Switzerland. In Switzerland, they are questioned by police, and have their passports taken. They end up getting visas and go to Montreaux and get a hotel.
ReplyDeleteThe term “A separate peace” is related to the famous author John Knowles. His most known novel was entitled A Separate Peace. I believe when Henry said this term he meant that he is done with his involvement in the war, and they’ll go their different ways. After leaving the war and Henry got off the train in Milan he decided to go into a wine shop for coffee. The man who worked there questioned Henry about his time on the front and offered him a place to stay if he was in trouble. He also has a proposition to sell him leave papers. These papers would make it seem like Henry was allowed to leave the war, and he wasn’t just trying to leave for no reason. He gave Henry some valuable advice when he told him to not wear his coat, because people could tell that he took the stars off (the ones people wore on army coats). Henry then goes to see his friend Ralph Simmons who is an opera singer. He lets Henry have some normal clothes so Henry won’t draw any kind of attention to himself. Henry feels sad because he receives sneers and stares since he is not off fighting or wearing an army uniform. He is still in danger in Italy because he could be arrested for leaving his regiment, so he must go to Switzerland to be protected. During this section of the book Henry plays billiards with an incredibly healthy ninety-four year old man named Count Greffi. The author, Hemingway, included him in the story to show it was someone Henry looked up to and would call a role model. It was also a break from the drama of trying to not get Henry arrested in the story. Emilio set up the billiards date between Henry and Count Greffi, he is a very nice man. He helped Henry and Miss. Barkley escape to Switzerland because he overheard people talking that they were going to arrest Henry in the morning. He lends the couple a boat and Henry rows him and Barkley all throughout the night. Once they arrive they go out for a nice breakfast. They get stopped by the police but the police believe that the two are there for a winter sport and let them on their way. Book four ends when Henry and Catherine Barkley go to a hotel in Montreaux.
ReplyDelete“A Separate Peace” was the name of a novel written by John Knowles. I think when Henry says “a separate peace” he means his time is up with the war and he is going his separate ways from it. The bar operator offers to give Henry a place to stay and leave papers. Simmons is Henry’s friend that is an opera singer. Simmons helps him by giving him advice about Switzerland and new clothes to travel in. The new clothes protect Henry from being recognized as an officer from the war. At this point, Henry is nervous about being caught and arrested. He is also anxious to see Katherine. Henry is still in danger of being arrested and must flee the country. Count Greffi is an old man that was introduced earlier in the book. Hemmingway included this scene to lighten up the book a little bit and to forget about Henry’s circumstances. Emilo is a kind caring person that is there for his friends. I know this because Emilo overheard people talking at the bar saying that Henry would be arrested in the morning. Emilio gave Henry this information right away as well as a boat for him and Catherine to escape to Switzerland in. When Lt. Henry and Catherine reach Switzerland they eat breakfast and soon after are arrested. The police question them but let them go because Henry said they came for winter sport. After that they go to Montreux and stay in a hotel.
ReplyDeleteI believe what Henry means when he says "A seperate peace" is that he himself has made peace with the war, but for others the war still continues. The bar operator tells Henry he can give him leave papers. Also, he obtains civilian clothes for Henry because it is obvious where he had cut the officer stars off from. Simmons is Henry's buddy who is a singer. Simmons gives Henry a way to get to Switzerland and news clothes. He advises him to take a rowboat from Stresa. Henry is depressed because he still has to hide from the law. Yet, he is anxious to see Catherine. Count Greffi is an old ninety-four year old man who shares his wisdom with Henry over a game of billiards. Count Greffi is somewhat of a father figure for Henry because he is the only one in Italy who Henry has looked up to. I think the author added this part to show that the change Henry has been experiencing throughout the boomk has finally come to an end after the Count parts his wisdom upon Henry. Emilio is a good man and a loyal friend to Henry. He warns Henry that the police will come for him in the morning so he entrusts Henry with his boat so that Henry and Catherine can escape to Switzerland safely. After Catherine and Henry land on the shore, they go eat some breakfast. When they go back to retrieve their bags, an official takes them to the customs office. They claimed they were architects from Italy who were looking for some winter sport in Montreux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is very kind to Henry. He offers Henry a place to stay if he is in trouble and also offers him leave papers for the war. The bar operator also informs Henry to change out of his coat because he could tell where his stars were on his shoulder. Simmons is a singer and a friend of Henry's. Simmons gives Henry directions to Switzerland and some civilian clothes to wear so Henry will not be recognized as an officer. At this point Henry kind of felt empty inside because he hadn't seen Catherine in a while. Henry was still in a lot of danger with the possibility of being arrested for leaving the army. He realized he must change and look like a civilian and also probably leave the country with Catherine. Count Greffi is one of Henry's older friends and is included because the author didn't want this section of the book to be too depressing. Emilio is a true caring friend to Henry. Emilio gave Henry a warning during the middle of the night that he would be arrested in the morning and that Henry should leave as soon as possible. Once Catherine and Henry reached Switzerland they took time to eat breakfast because they knew they were going to be arrested afterwards. Their predictions were correct because they were arrested and questioned, but let go fairly quickly to go wherever they wanted.
ReplyDeleteHenry is still in danger even after he escapes from the army. He is in danger of getting arrested for desertion of the army. So in order not to get caught, he must take a row boat and row to Switzerland. There he would be out of danger of getting arrested by the Italian Army. By going to Switzerland he is free from any rule from the Italian Army and safe to live his life.
ReplyDeleteAfter escaping Henry meets a man and Simmons. Simmons is and opera student and friend of Henry, who gives Henry civilian clothes so he does not stand out and draw suspicion when traveling in Italy and to Switzerland
Simmons is the opera student that Henry befriended in the bar after the horse races, and he helps Henry by providing him with clothing so that he can travel to Switzerland without drawing suspicion. Henry feels that he just wants to put the war behind him, to start a new life with Catherine her unborn baby. Upon arriving to Stressa to find Catherine, Henry checks in to the Hotel “des Isles Borromees”. Henry must remain low-key to avoid recognition in order to move about the town to find Catherine, and soon after returns to his room. Count Greffi is a 94 year old man whom Henry would play billiards with; Hemmingway included this scene to show that Henry needs reassurance in his life. The Count acts like a father figure to Henry by giving him advice, or just pondering the questions of reality. The next morning, Emilio (the bartender) wake Henry to warn him that he will be arrested in the morning, exhibiting trusting qualities that an old friend might. I find Emilio to be kind and practical; he gives Henry and Catherine warning about the police and a way to escape to Switzerland only asking repayment for the boat at their convenience. Shortly upon arrival at their destination and a short breakfast, the two are escorted to get their things from the boat and are (kindly) arrested to be provided a carriage to Montreux by Swiss Soldiers.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is nice to Henry, offering him a place to stay, and leave papers if he were to ever get into any sort of trouble from the war. He also tells him to change jackets, because he can recognize where the starts were pinned on his shoulder. Simmons is a friend of Henry's and he advises him to leave Italy. He tells him to go to Switzerland, by taking a rowboat from Stresa. Henry is stressed because he knows he has to hide from the law enforcement, but he is also excited to be able to see Catherine. Count Greffi is a ninety-four year old male, a friend of Henry's, and he is included in the story to lighten up the mood for Henry, make him feel relaxed for once. Count Greffi is sort of a family-related relief for Henry (even though they are unrelated). Emilio is a good friend of Henry's and he is very loyal. He warned Henry that the police are looking for him. Emilio helps Henry and Catherine escape to Switzerland. When they arrive there, they eat breakfast, and are arrested, but they are let go because they convinced the officials that they were architects from Italy.
ReplyDeleteWhile Henry is eating breakfast, the bar operator offers Henry a place to stay and says that he can get him leave papers so that he doesn’t have to go back to the war. The operator helps Henry by telling him to get a new coat because he could tell that he cut off his stars and replaced them with a different fabric. He also advises him to be careful who he stays with because he could get turned over to the police. Simmons is Henry’s good friend. Simmons is an opera singer and studying music. When Henry asks Simmons to go by clothes for him, he lets Henry borrow clothes to save money and so that he will fit in better. At this point, Henry feels very unsafe and constantly feels as though someone will recognize him and will turn him in to the police. Henry then decides that he and Catherine have to get out of Italy as soon as they can. Count Greffi is an old man that Henry plays billiards with. He is a role model to Henry and he admires him for his wisdom, although Count Greffi says its cynicism. Hemingway included this scene to get away from all of the chaos in Henry’s life. Emilio is a very kind person. He brought to Henry’s attention that he was going to be arrested in the morning. He gives Henry and Catherine a boat and directions to Switzerland. Once they reach Switzerland they are stopped by the police. Henry tells them that they are there for winter sports. The police gave into their story and allowed them to go on their way to Montreaux.

Knowing that, Emilio helps Henry and Catherine escape to Switzerland. After arrival they eat breakfast and are arrested. They were able to be released by convincing the officers they are there for winter sports.
ReplyDeleteWhen Henry arrives at the hotel the bar operator advises that he changes into civilian clothes and lets him have a hotel room. This helps Henry get ahead of the game and figure out what he has to do. Simmons is a singer, also one of henrys friends who gives him civilian clothes and direction to Switzerland. Simmons tells Henry that his best way is to take a row boat and go down the river. At this point all he wants to do is be with the one he loves, Catherine. But he constantly reminds himself he is running from the law and he but do something before he gets caught. Henry is still in danger, so he now must gather his belongs, along with Catherine and her things. They must leave and go to Switzerland to be safe from Italian officers. Count Greffi is an older friend of Henrys who plays billiards with him. They chat about life and make Henry cheer up. Count Greffi is included in this section to lighten the mood and make the situation seem less depressing. Emilio is a great guy; he does everything he can to help Henry and Catherine stay out of trouble by sneaking them out to the row boat in the river. Once Catherine and Henry reach Switzerland they leave there row boat and bags to go eat breakfast. When they go back to get their bags there is the police. They are captured and when asked why they are here they lie and say they are going to Montreux for winter sports.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator, at the hotel, tells Henry that he should change into civilian clothes not to arouse suspicion. He also lets Henry have a room at the hotel. Simmons is a singer that helps Henry get civilian clothes. By this point Henry wants to get away from the war. But he is still being hunted by the Battle Police. Simmons gives him directions to Switzerland to escape. Count Greffi is a old friend of Henry's. I think that he is a relief from the current drama of the story. Emilio is an extremely useful person to Henry and Catherine. He warns them that they are about to be arrested and gets a boat for them to paddle to Switzerland on. When Henry and Catherine arrive at Switzerland they have breakfast, then are soon arrested by the police. They lied their way out and went to a hotel.

He also tells Henry to leave for Switzerland. At this point, Henry is tired of being away from Catherine and how he always has to be on the lookout. Henry is still is danger and he must go to Switzerland to escape. Count Greffi is an old man who is someone Henry looks up to for advice. He offers Henry civilian clothes so he will blend in. He also tells him that a good place to escape to is Switzerland. At this point Henry is upset with life and misses not always having to hide. Henry is still in danger because technically he deserted the war and that is against the law so he could be arrested. Henry must flee from the country before he is arrested or worse. Count Greffi is an older gentlemen that invites Henry to play pool and talk. I think Hemingway included this scene because he wanted Henry to get advice from an older, wiser, man who seemed to be sort of a role model to Henry. Emilio is a good friend of Henry because he warns Henry that early in the morning the police are going to come and arrest him. He also offers Henry and Miss Berkley a boat and food so they can escape to Switzerland. The couple row all through the night and in the morning reach Switzerland. They go to have a nice breakfast when they are arrested by police and questioned. The police believe that they are just there for winter sport and recommend good places for them to go.
ReplyDeleteAfter rowing all night Catherine and Henry finally reach the waters of Switzerland. They tie up their boat and eat breakfast at a little diner. When they come back to their boat customs officials take them in for questioning. When asked why they came here by rowboat, they said they row as a sport and are here for the winter sport. The officials point them to montreux. Which is the best place for the winter sport.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is incredibly nice to Henry. He offers him a place to stay as well as fake papers to get Henry out of the war that Henry dreads so much. The operator also suggests that Henry change his clothes so that he won't get recognized. Simmons, one of Henry's friends, then tells him to go to Switzerland. Henry really wants to meet up with Catherine but he is running from the police so that poses a major issue. Count Greffi takes some of the stress out of Henry's life. He makes it easier on Henry and relaxes him. Emilio does everything that he can to help out Henry and Catherine and even sneaks them out to a row boat on a river. They make it to Switzerland but are arrested the next morning. They are released by convincing the police that they are there on winter sports.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator allows Henry to stay at the bar secretly while giving him fake leave papers so he doesn’t have to return to the army. He gives Henry some of his clothes and tells him to go to Switzerland. At this point, Henry just wants to be respected now more than anything. He notices that people are judging him because he isn’t in the army like most men his age. As long as Henry is still in Italy he is still in danger. In order to be safe he must cross the border into Switzerland. Ninety-four-year-old man Count Greffi is someone who Henry has known for awhile now. Henry looks up to him and has a great amount of respect for him. Emilio warns Henry and Catherine that they will be arrested when crossing the border. This shows that he is a loyal friend telling the honest truth and he is very bright knowing important information. When approaching Switzerland, Catherine and Henry are stopped by the police. They decide to lie and tell them that they are there for winter sports so they can continue to Montreaux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is a kind man who not only offers Henry a place to stay, but leave papers to exit the army, and even some civilian clothes to wear to look a bit more normal in the city. Though it is a tempting offer, Henry kindly declines to it but thanks him anyways for the thought. He also helps Henry by giving him directions on how to sneak Catherine and himself into Switzerland without being caught by any gaurds on the coastline which he later uses quite successfully. Before he leaves, he meets a talented opera singer named Ralph Simmons and he helps Henry out by giving him some civilian clothes to blend in for when he sneaks out.
ReplyDeleteAfter Henry manages to escape from the army he meets a bar operator who offers to give him fake papers and a place to stay if he does not have one. He also tells him that his uniform stands out because of its color and the places where the stars were cut off are clearly visible. Though Henry declines these offers, he remembers the bar operator’s advice and obtains civilian clothes from Simmons, who is a music student. As Henry is going to Stresa to find Catherine, he receives disapproving stares from other passengers for being a civilian of his age. Henry’s indifference to their stares shows that he is comfortable with his situation and glade to be away from the war though he stills feels like an imposter without his uniform. After Henry finds Catherine in Stresa, he is still in danger and needs to leave the country. While he is staying at a hotel in Stresa, Henry meets Count Greffi and their discussion in the billiards room focuses on religion, the war, and death. The conversation foreshadows Catherine’s upcoming death and Henry’s call to God when she is dying at the hospital. When Henry and Catherine are forced to leave the country they receive help from Emilio, who warns them when the police are about to come arrest them and provides them with a boat and food to make it across the lake to Switzerland. After the couple reaches Switzerland safely the police arrests them but Henry and Catherine manage to get away by convincing the officers that they were just American and British tourists.
ReplyDeleteWhen reading Yatri's post I discovered that when the town's people give Henry disapproving looks, because of his age and why he is not fighting in the war, this proves that Henry is still not safe from getting arrested for fleeing.
DeleteI agree with Yatri's opinions and thoughts during this part of the novel. Although, when I was reading the conversation between Count Greffi and Henry I was thinking to literal during the conversation when death was mentioned. As I go back and read the conversation through again I realize how Count Greffi's knowledge of death is preparing Henry for his child's and Catherine's death. This was one of the ways Hemingway used to foreshadow the concluding events of the novel.
After deserting the army Henry is in some deep trouble. The barman tries to assist Henry by offering fake leave papers and a place to stay, because he was Henry's "friend". Henry goes off to where Catherine was staying, he explains the situation to her and they both decide that it would be of Henry's best interest to not get arrested. Once Henry finds out that he is to be arrested in the morning the couple flees to Switzerland via row boat. Some officers are conspicuous of the couple and take them into questioning. After Henry convinces the officers with a great story as to why they were there, he and Catherine are free to go about Switzerland to find a place with great winter sport.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry a safe place to stay and leave papers. Henry met Simmons when he was in the hospital and Simmons was taking voice lessons. Simmons supplies Henry with civilian clothing. Henry is no longer interested in the war, but just wants to be at peace with Catherine somewhere. Henry is still in danger until he leaves the country, and must stay incognito. Count Greffi is an older man Henry knows, and they play pool together. Henry admires Count Greffi and he lightens up Henry’s mood. Henry’s friend Emilio is dependable and kind person. He alarms Henry that the police are coming for him in the morning and provides a boat for Catherine and Henry to flee to Switzerland. In Switzerland, they are stopped by the police. The two lie about studying art in Italy and coming to Switzerland for the winter sport, but the police see their money and passports and allow them to continue to Montreux.
ReplyDeleteAfter leaving the war, Henry meets a bar operator who offers him a plact to stay, and leave papers. Henry refuses the offer but the operator suggests that Henry buys some civilian clothing. When Henry talks to Simmons, Simmons suggests that Henry leave Italy and go to Switzerland. Simmons also gives Henry some clothes so he won't stand out. Henry is sad and depressed at this point in time and is worried about Catherine and the baby. Henry finds his old friend, Count Greffi, and they play pool together. Hemmingway included this scene in order to show the reader that even when everything is bad, there's still something good. Emilio is a friend of Henrys and he comes to them at night to tell them that the police are coming to arrest Henry. Emilio gives Henry and Catherine his boat so they can row across a lake to Switzerland. When in Switzerland they encounter the police and are questioned. They lie and say that they're studying are and Henry is there to hunt.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is very nice to Henry by offering him a place to stay and he even got him leave papers. He also gives him some advice to change into normal clothes. This is great help to Henry now that he is ahead and just needs to figure out what he needs to do. Simmons is a singer, also one of Henrys friends who gives him normal clothes and tells him how to get to Switzerland. Henry wants to see Catherine so bad, and all he seems to do is stress about it, being he is running from the police. Emilio is a friend to Henry and he knew that the police were after him and were so close to catching Henry, so he warned him, and helped him and Catherine to get to Switzerland. After they get there they eat breakfast then they are arrested. They told the officers that they were there for the winter sports and they believed them and were released. Count Greffi’s character helps Henry relax a little, and he isn’t as serious, trying to get Henry not to worry about anything anymore.

ReplyDeleteWhen Henry meets the bar operator he is very nice to him and offers him a place to stay and he also got him leave papers. He gives Henry the advice to change to normal clothes. Now all that Henry needs to do is figure out what to do. Simmons is a friend of Henry's who is a singer. He give some normal clothes to Henry and tells him how to get to Switzerland. At this point in his life, the only thing that he wants to do is to be with Catherine. Henry is definitely still in danger, he is running from the police. Count Greffi is one of Henry's old friends. Henry stops and plays pool with him. Hemingway included this scene to show that even in a world that is falling to pieces there is still some light in life. Emilio is a helpful person and a good friend. I can tell because he knows that the police are close to catching Henry and he warns him about it and helps him to get to Catherine. They are arrested after they stop for breakfast and he helps him to get released by saying they were there for winter sports. He was risking his well-being to help a friend. When Catherine and Henry reach Switzerland, they are stopped by the police and questioned. They lie and say that Henry is there to hunt and that Catherine is there to study.
ReplyDeleteWhen Henry says that he has made his separate peace with the war it means that he has separated himself from the war to achieve peace. The bar operator offers to house Henry and he also offers Henry leave papers. Simmons is a man that Henry knows who is studying singing. Simmons gives Henry some civilian so Henry is not caught in his uniform. Henry feels like he is parading around in someone else's life at this point. Henry is still in danger because he could be caught for leaving the army and killed. Henry must keep a low profile to prevent himself from being caught and punished. Count Greffi is an old man staying in the same hotel as Henry who enjoys playing billards with Henry. Hemingway includes this scence so that Henry can get some in sight to old age and love from Count Greffi. Count Greffi helps Henry understand how important love can be. Emilio is a kind hearted person and the reader knows it because Emilio warns Henry about the police who plan to arrest him in the morning. Emilio gives Henry his boat so that Henry can row himself and Catherine across the lake so that they can escape to freedom in Switzerland. After landing in Switzerland Henry and Catherine are arrested and question about what they are doing in Switzerland. The two are release after they explain they are in Switzerland for the winter sport. When they are released the two get a hotel in Montreux.
ReplyDeleteAfter getting off the train, Henry stops in town for breakfast. The bar operator offers Henry fake leave papers so he doesn't have to go back into the war and gives him a place to stay. After declining the leave papers, the bar operator told Henry that he should try to find different clothing since his uniform stood out among the civilians dressed normally. Taking up his advice, Henry found his friend Simmons who provided him with new clothing and told him how to get to Switzerland. At this point, Henry is depressed with his life because he misses being able to walk around freely and not have to go out in disguise. Count Greffi is an older man who is very wise. I believe Hemingway included this scene because Count Greffi helped Henry realize that even when times are hard, there is always good things to happen right around the corner. Emilio seems to be a very nice and loyal friend because he warned Henry about the police that were coming to arrest him. When Henry and Catherine reach Switzerland, they are questioned by the police. After lying and saying they were there for the winter sport, the police let them go and they were able to continue their journey to Montreux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers to let Henry stay with him and get him release letters reasonably priced. Henry declines the offer. However, the bar operator is of help when he suggests that Henry change his clothing because of the recognizable star stained patches on his uniform.
ReplyDeleteAfter leaving the bar, Henry plans to meet with his friend Simmons. Simmons was a man Henry knew to be studying singing and lived in Porta Magenta. Henry wanted Simmons to be able to help him out of his dilemma.
Henry later reconnects with Catherine. Henry has to hide from the Italian army until he finds a way to leave Italy. Staying undercover, however, leaves Henry feeling like his life lacks meaning. Without Catherine by his side, every day and minute, he becomes bored and lonely. Henry decides to revisit the bar where he met Count Greffi. Count Greffi, an elderly man, wishes to join Henry in a game of billiards. The elderly man, Count Greffi, gives Henry a life-talk about wisdom and growing old. He also reveals his religious beliefs to Henry as he asks him to pray for him when he dies. Hemingway includes this scene in the novel because it provides Henry with the encouragement that one day his life will have meaning again.
Emilio is the barman that Henry befriends. Emilio came the Henry one night to warn him that he will be arrested in the morning. Henry and Catherine decide that they must boat to Switzerland in the storm. When they arrive in Switzerland they are questioned about their intentions. Henry comes up with a story that allows them to live in Switzerland.
When Henry meets the bartender he is offered fake leave papers and also a place to stay if he needs it.When Henry rejects the offer given to him he is told, by the bartender, to get civilian clothes.Henry goes to his friend Simmons, a singer, and gets some clothes from him and tells him how to get to Switzerland. Henry doesn't like to wear the civilian clothing after being in uniform for so long. When Henry meets Count Greffi he describes him as very wise and lively. My thought is that Hemingway included Count Greffi to show Henry there is a way to stand up against the harsh nature of life.Emilio is a very loyal friend to Henry telling him about the police and giving him his boat and food to get to Switzerland. When the pair arrive in Switzerland they are arrested, but they are then let go and are able to move around.
ReplyDeleteIn book four Henry meets many helpful characters. One such character is the bar operator. The bar operator offers Henry leave papers and a place to stay. Although Henry declines these offers the bartender is successful in giving Henry advice. He advises Henry to get civilian clothes as it is obvious he has had his stars removed. This advice proves to be very helpful. Henry also meets up with his old friend, Simmons the opera singer, who is quite obliging. Simmons gives Henry civilian clothes so he is not seen as apprehensive. Like the bar operator, Simmons also provides Henry with helpful advice. He advises Henry to go to Switzerland where he will not be as affected by the war. Despite all these positive people surrounding him, Henry is not totally happy. At this point in the novel Henry feels as though he has lost his credibility and no longer has the respect he used to. Unfortunately, all the helpful characters were not able to boost Henry’s mood.
ReplyDeleteWhen Henry uses the term "a separate peace", he refers to the peace at home away from the chaos of war. The bar operator is hospitable towards Henry, offers him shelter, warns him about his uniform that would compromise him until he is out of Italy. Simmons is a friend of Henry's that gives him a change of clothes to disguise him, and he also suggests that Henry go to Switzerland. Henry doesn't like the disrespect he gets for looking like he should be in the war, but isn't. Henry must leave Italy to avoid the danger of arrest or death. Count Greffi is a very old man whom Henry plays billiards with. Hemingway included this scene to show that Henry needs some sort of guidance, and Count Greffi acted as a father figure here. Emilio seems like a "good friend" type, who would have your back in an emergency, for instance, when he alerts Henry and Catherine that they'll be arrested at the border. When the two reach the border, they tell the officers that they're tourists in search of winter sports in Montreux.
ReplyDeleteA separate peace is from our first book, "their Eyes Were WatchingvGod." When Henry says this he means that there is a certain kind of peace being away from the stress and worries of war. The bar operator gives Henry leave papers that say he isn't deserting. The operator advises Henry not to wear his coat because of the ripped off stars, he also tells Henry to be careful of the people he lives because he could turned over to the police. Simmons gives him clothes and tells him how to get to Switzerland . Henry feels like an imposter; he misses how people would treat him because of what he was wearing (being in his own clothes). Henry would be in danger if the police caught him because he would be killed and Catherine would be left a pregnant widow. Count Greffi wasn't important to the story but now he is the character who lightens the mood of the novel. Emilio warns Henry that the police will come in the morning to attest him. Catherine and Henry are questioned when they finally reach switzerland but after bribing the men they are able to get to Montreux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is very helpful to Henry. He offers him a place for him to stay and leave papers allowing him not to return to the war. Noticing the torn off stars from his coat, he advises Henry to get a new one as well as to be careful who he stays with otherwise he could get reported. Simmons, an opera singer and friend of Henry is also helpful by supplying him with civilian clothing so he will blend in better. At this point, Henry wants nothing more than to be with Catherine in a safe place and forget about the war. Still in danger, Henry is terrified of being recognized everywhere he goes. He decides that the only safe thing Catherine and him can do is get out of Italy as soon as possible. Count Greffi is an older man that Henry plays pool with. Having always been somewhat of a role model to Henry, the Count's presence comforts Henry at this difficult time in his life. I think Hemingway adds this scene to get away from all the tragic events that have been occurring in Henry's life. Emilio, another friend of Henry's, is a very ind and generous person. He immediately alerts Henry that the police are after them and allows him and Catherine to use his boat to flee to Switzerland. Once in Switzerland, Henry and Catherine are stopped by the police. Convincing them they are here for the winter sports and to study art, the police allow them to continue to Montreaux.
ReplyDeleteHenry uses the term "a separate peace" to describe the personal peace that he has found in his life; the world is still at war, but he has separated himself from it. Henry meets a bar operator in Milan, a kind man who offers Henry a place to stay and false papers of leave. Simmons is an opera singer who became acquainted with Henry earlier in the novel, and in this part of the story, Simmons gifts Henry with civillian clothes and advises him to flee to Switzerland. Henry begins to miss the respect that he once recieved for wearing an officer's uniform, and many Italians look down on Henry, as most men his age were off fighting in the war. Even in civillian clothes, Henry is still in danger of being recognized and arrested for abandoning the fight. Henry realizes that he has no choice but to move out of Italy. Count Greffi is a ninety-four year old man who had served as a diplomat for Austria and Italy in his lifetime. He is incredibly kind and well-mannered, and invites Henry to play billiards. I feel that Hemingway included the scene with Greffi to show that even in times of struggle, gentle and friendly people are still to be found. Greffi also shares many bits of wisdom with Henry (even though Greffi feels that the wisdom of old men is a fallacy). Emilio is a generous and helpful man; his character is shown when he gives Henry and Catherine his boat to travel to Switzerland. Emilio also warns the couple that they will be arrested at the Swiss border. Using Emilio's warning, the two convince the officers on the Swiss border that they are tourists interested in winter sports.
ReplyDeleteHenry finds many people willing to help someone leave the war. Almost immediately after he leaves the train, he finds a man who tells him to remember that he has friends. The man offers him a place to stay, papers, and any help if he is in trouble. Henry returns to Milan where he asks Simmons for his help. Henry asks if him could buy him some civilian clothing. Instead Simmons gives Henry some of his own clothes and offers to help with anything else. Henry travels to Stresa to find Catherine. There he comes across an old friend, Emilio the bartender, who becomes Henry’s greatest help. Emilio comes in the middle of the night to warn Henry that the police plan to arrest him. He helps them take their luggage to his boat and allows them to sail it to Switzerland, where they will be safe. He also gives them all the food from the bar, and two bottles of brandy. By helping them he lost his boat, and endangered himself.
ReplyDeleteDuring the course of book four, there are two characters who offer Henry a considerable amount of help and guidance. Henry meets a bar operator who (first) offers him shelter and once he learns of Henry’s predicament, leave papers as well. The bar operator then goes on to notice that Henry has removed the stars from his uniform and informs him that one could see that the fabric is a different shade than where the stars were. He advises him to get civilian clothes. Henry refuses shelter and leave papers and goes on to meet his friend Simmons, an opera singer. He lends Henry some of his clothes and tells him to go to Switzerland.
ReplyDelete"A separate peace" was from our first book "Their Eyes are Watching God". Lieutenant Henry means there's peace for him and Catherine through the chaos caused by the war. The bar operator offers Henry a safe place to stay and leave papers. Henry turns his offer down, but takes the bar operator's advice about getting civilian clothes (his uniform was still noticeable after ripping the dressings off). Simmons is a friend of Henry's that is an opera singer. He gives Henry a cigarette and generously gives him civilian clothes. Henry feels like an imposter; he wants to be respected by wearing a certain uniform. If the Italian army were to find Henry out of his uniform, he could be arrested. He realizes that he is still in danger of being caught, so he decided that they were going to go to Switzerland until after the war was over. Count Greffi is a 94 year old man that has been an old friend to Henry. This scene is included to brighten the mood and to give hope from the constant depression. Emilio was the bar tender at the hotel Henry and Catherine were staying at, but him and Henry were acquainted from before. He is a kind, caring person who would do anything for his friends. He proves this because he woke up Henry and warned him that the military planned on arresting him early in the morning. Emilio gave his boat to Henry and all the food and drink from the bar. Also, he gave directions to get out of Italy and into Switzerland. Once Catherine and Henry reached Switzerland, they left their bags in the boat and ate breakfast. They knew that afterwards they would be arrested, which did happen. Henry lied to the police and was free to stay in Switzerland.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers to give Henry a place to stay and fake leave papers. He also tells Henry to get some civilian clothes because it is obvious that he cut the stars off his uniform. Simmons is an opera singer and an old friend of Henry's. Henry asks him to go buy civilian clothes so he doesn't stand out and Simmons gives him some of his own. He also advises him to go to Switzerland. Henry is still in danger, as long as he is in Italy, and he can be arrested. He must cross the border and safely get into Switzerland. Count Greffi is a ninety-four year old man who Henry plays Billiards with. Hemmingway included him in the story to offer a look at what kind of person Henry would look up to. Emilio turns out to be a very loyal friend when he warns Henry tht he will be arrested in the morning. He lets Catherine and Henry take the boat to escape. When they reach Switzerland they are arrested shortly. They make up a lie saying they have come for the winter sport and are allowed to go to Montreaux.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator is extremely nice to Henry. He offers him shelter as well as fake leave papers to get Henry out of the war that he dislikes very much. Henry declines the kind offer regretfully but thanks him for his generosity. Simmons and Henry met when Henry was receiving medical attention at the hospital and Simmons was taking voice lessons. Simmons gives Henry civilian clothing to blend in more in the city. Henry no longer wants to be in the war. he is only interested in being with Catherine. The pair decided to escape to Switzerland. When entering the country, they are arrested but then later released to do as they please.
ReplyDeleteThe term "a separate peace" was first used in "Their Eyes Were Watching God". Henry means this as he has found peace elsewhere, separate from the stresses of the war and the defeated soldiers.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry a safe place to stay and leave papers which Henry then refuses.
Simmons is one of Henry's old friends and an opera singer. Henry, taking the bar operator's advice, asks Simmons to purchase Henry some civilian clothes. Simmons then gives Henry some of his own clothing to wear to prevent him from standing out.
Because Henry is undercover at this time he feels ashamed. He feels like an imposter and that his life holds little meaning. His only true desire is to be with Catherine.
Because Henry is out of his uniform and avoiding the war that is a crime. He risks being arrested in Italy. Right now Henry needs to find a way to safely get into Switzerland.
Count Greffi is an elderly man of 94 that plays billiards with Henry on occasion. This scene may have been put in as a way of relieving some depression and giving hope to Henry and the readers that there may be some happy people still left.
Emilio is a very loyal friend of Henry's and he comes off as kind and selfless. Emilio warns Henry that he is going to be arrested in the morning and then lends them his boat in order for Henry and Catherine to escape.
When they reach Switzerland they are soon arrested, as they had known was inevitable, but lie and state that they are simply tourists interested in the winter sports. Catherine and Henry are then set free.
What Henry means by "a separate peace" is that he has found something that is less stressful than the outside war. The bar operator is kind enough to offer Henry a place to stay as well as phony leave papers to get him out of some trouble with the Italian army. At this point in the book Henry is extremely concerned about his and Catherine's future, especially with the baby on the way. Henry is still in danger because the police are on the lookout for him, and Emilio warns him of arrest in a morning. Emilio proves himself as a good man by helping Henry and Catherine out.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry a place to stay, and papers. Henry refuses his offer. Simmons is one of Henry's friends, and gives him advice on how to get to Switzerland, and civilian clothes. Henry is worried about his, Catherine, and the baby's future. He is in danger, the police are after him. He was warned that they would be there to arrest him in the morning, so he and Catherine got on a boat, and rowed to Switzerland. Emilio is a good person who is willing to help people. He gave Henry and Catherine his boat and some food so that could get to Switzerland before the police arrive to arrest him. In Switzerland, they went to breakfast, came back to the boat to retrieve their things, and were questioned by the police. He told them that he and his 'cousin', Catherine, were tourists, and came to Switzerland for the winter sports. The police bought the story, and set them free.
ReplyDeleteHenry says “a separate peace” and means that even though there’s complete chaos happening, there is some peace, you just have to find it. The bar operator offers to give him leave papers and to house him. He helps Henry by telling him not to let others house him because people could turn him in, also, he tells him not to wear his jacket out because it shows where stars from the army have been ripped off. Simmons, a new friend, tells him to make leave for Switzerland and gets him everyday clothes. At this point of the book, he’s pretty depressed and is still in trouble because police are still searching for him, to stay out of trouble he must wear disguises and try to fit in with the rest of the civilians. Count Greffi is Henry’s old friend who plays pool with him. He shows this scene to demonstrate “a separate peace”. Emilio is a kind, generous, caring, would do anything to help kind of guy. We know this because he tells Henry that police are coming for him and he gives him and Catherine a boat to leave for Switzerland. When the two reach Switzerland they are met by police and are interrogated. They lie about studying art in Italy and came here for a winter sport, and are granted access for Switzerland.
ReplyDeleteWhat i think Henry means by a seperate peace is that he found something to think and care about outside the war. Catherine is that seperate peace. Between all the chaos of the war henry was searching for that peace and he found it. the bar operator was kind enough to offer him a place to stay.
ReplyDelete“A separate peace” is a military term. It occurs when a country has entered an alliance, but later backs out of the fighting. The other countries continue to fight, but this country is now out of the fighting. The bar operator offers him a place to stay and leave papers, but Henry refuses. The bar operator also tells Henry to take off his coat because people would see where the stars were cut off. Simmons is a man who Henry met earlier who is studying singing. Simmons tells him about the mechanics of going to Switzerland and also gives Henry clothes so he can blend in. Henry does not enjoy wearing civilian clothes because he has been in uniform for a long time. Henry is still in danger of being arrested and must get to Switzerland. Count Greffi is a 94 year old man who Henry met last time he stayed at the hotel. He and Henry reflect on many things and the Count is similar to Henry. Emilio is kind and caring. He helps Henry find Catherine and saves Henry from arrest. Henry and Catherine are arrested when they reach Switzerland, but they say they are there for winter sport and are allowed to stay.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers to get Henry papers and to let him stay as long as he needs. He helps him by noticing the cut-away stars on Henry's jacket and telling him he should get new clothes so he doesn't cause suspicion. Simmons is an old friend of Henry's who gives him whatever civilian clothes he needs. At this point in his life, Henry is done with the war and wants nothing to do with it. The war is why Henry is still in danger, because if someone discovered he left the army he would be arrested. The only to escape is by fleeing the country. While at a hotel with Catherine, Henry meets a lonely old man named Count Greffi. Hemingway includes a scene between the two because it reveals Henry's maturing personality and lets him in on the wisdom of life. Emilio is a loyal, kind man and he demonstrates this through his actions towards Henry. If Emilio had not warned him of the impending arrest, he would not have made it to Switzerland in time. When Catherine and Henry do reach Switzerland, they are still picked up by police but manage to charm their way out of it.
ReplyDeleteThe bar operator offers Henry a place to hid from the police and leave papers so he can leave the army. Simmons is a friend of the bar operator who gives Henry clothes so he blends in and advises him to go to Switzerland. Henry no longer cares about war but only his love for Carherine. Henry is still in danger because if the police find him he will be charged with running from the army an Henry knows the only way to avoid that is to leave the country. Count Greffi is a lonely old man that Hemingway adds in order to show the maturity and new mindset that Henry now has and how it has changed sothe beginning. Emilio is a kind friend that helps Henry get to Switzerland with Catherine before an arrest could be made. When they reach Switzerland they are confronted by police but manage to get into Switzerland by lying about studying art in Italy and participating in a winter sport.
