Their Eyes Were Watching God Posts

If your eyes are watching Their Eyes Were Watching God (or you've started reading it, that is), feel free to start posting your comments. We're going to try something new for this book that I hope will be beneficial to you. I'm going to post discussion prompts that relate to your possible essay topics, so you have a focused discussion forum in which to rehearse and develop your thoughts for your essay. Reading the ideas and interpretations of your peers will help by reinforcing some of your ideas while challenging others, helping us all to stretch our thinking in new ways. When you are making your astute observations, remember to support your view with detailed examples and/or relevant quotes from the novel (you're much harder to argue with that way!).

  1. I apologize for being late; I was traveling for a few weeks and forgot about the deadline.

    1. Why does Janie rush into marriage so quickly with Jody? It seems like she only knew the man for a few days before she decided he was "the one".

  2. 2. Why did Grandma suddenly approve of Janie's marriage to Logan Killicks right after she lectured Janie on not marrying him? Where did this sudden change of heart come from? Even if the span of time between her lecture and Janie's marriage to Logan was many months, what caused Grandma to think better of him?

  3. 3. Why does Janie put up with Jody for twenty years? He was an abusive husband that frequently called her degrading names in public. She was perfectly fine with divorcing Logan Killicks, and his only offenses were insulting her cooking and asking her to help plow their farm. Jody was guilty of many more heinous offenses, yet she decided to withstand his abuses. Why?
